When James Harris Jr. needed a kidney transplant, hope came from an unexpected place—his former pool rival, Russ Redhead. Years after facing off in a high-stakes match, Russ stepped up to become James' living donor, giving him a second chance at life. "I don't think he realizes how much it means to me to have a life back," James shared. Their story reminds us of the impact of living organ donation and the unexpected ways kindness changes lives. Big win for our University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health Bel Air emergency team! US Acute Care Solutions recognized the ED with the “RAZzle Dazzle GOAT” award for cutting the rate of patients leaving without being seen from 9% to 3% in just one month. By implementing the Rapid Assessment Zone (RAZ) model, the team has improved patient flow, reduced wait times, and enhanced the overall care experience. A huge thank you to our dedicated ED team for making this possible and to USACS for the recognition!

From aspiring cancer researcher to Chief of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, Dr. Troy Abernathy has dedicated his career to making a difference. Inspired by a life-changing experience in Ecuador, he found his true calling in pediatrics—where he now serves as a role model for young patients, especially those who see themselves in him. Dr. Abernathy’s impact and leadership have earned him a spot on The Baltimore Sun’s Marylanders to Watch 2025 list, and we couldn’t be prouder! In honor of National Cancer Prevention Month, members from cancer care teams across the System were recognized and celebrated at the UMMS-sponsored Maryland Terrapins basketball game on Sunday 2/2. Representing a variety of roles from our programs, the group was invited to the court at halftime for the game ball presentation. From providers and nurses to surgeons and administrators to research and outreach – it takes a team to beat cancer! Helping Marylanders REBOUND – that’s a better state of care.

Our team creates a culture of compassion and well-being for themselves and, of course, for our patients. Join a team that knows a better state of care means more than just bedside care. https://lnkd.in/eJSGDw4b

Our executive team recently joined forces with The Baltimore Station to prepare, cook, and serve breakfast and lunch for community members. Giving back is an integral part of our mission, and we’re proud to support organizations making a difference in Baltimore. #abetterstateofcare
