Today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we reaffirm a simple truth: families are at the heart of sustainable development. Poverty is not neglect; rather, it is the collective failure of policies and systems that leave people behind. By ensuring respect and effective support for families, we can break the cycle of poverty, strengthen social inclusion, and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Too often, families living in poverty face not only material deprivation, but also social and institutional maltreatment. We must change our approach—moving from distrust and control to trust and collaboration. This requires policies that truly put people first: affordable health care and housing, decent work and fair wages, universal social protection and child welfare systems that support families. The path forward demands that we acknowledge the extraordinary efforts parents in poverty make every day and that we develop solutions with families, guided by their lived experiences and meaningful participation. The upcoming #SocialSummit2025 offers a critical opportunity to address these challenges. As we come together to reimagine social development for our time, let us commit to policies and actions that end the maltreatment of families in poverty, respect their dignity and ensure no one is left behind. Ahead of this milestone event, we have issued a call for new initiatives and commitments. Do you have an innovative solution for social development? Submit your commitment to the Doha Solutions Platform by 22 October 2025. Your initiative could be showcased at the Summit and inspire global action on solidarity and social inclusion.
