Saturday is the first-ever International Day of the Deep Seabed. Beneath the waves of the high seas —and beyond the borders of any nation— lies this vast part of the ocean floor known as ‘the Area.’ It covers more than half the global ocean and holds rich mineral resources that could play a key role in humanity’s progress. The International Day is an important moment to recognize and celebrate that the deep seabed belongs to all humankind —and must be protected.

Friday is World Cities Day. Cities drive innovation, economic growth and culture —but they also face big challenges, such as poverty, inequality, pollution and climate change. With more than half the world’s population living in cities, urban areas must become more sustainable, inclusive, safe and resilient. Sustainable cities need affordable housing, reliable transport, green spaces and climate-resilient infrastructure. Without these elements, rapid growth can lead to an increase in slums, traffic, pollution and disaster risks.
