UN Peacekeeping helps countries torn by conflict create conditions for lasting peace.

About us

Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Peacekeeping has unique strengths, including legitimacy, burden sharing, and an ability to deploy and sustain troops and police from around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates. UN peacekeepers provide security and the political and peacebuilding support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace.

• Investing in peace means investing in youth Youth play a critical role in building and sustaining peace, yet they are often excluded from decision-making processes. Peacekeeping missions work to empower young people, recognizing them as powerful agents of change and engaging youth in peace efforts, decision-making and institutional reform. Next week, as world leaders gather in New York for the 80th UN General Assembly, youth from around the world will also be present to advance the #YouthPeaceSecurity agenda. They will not only demand a seat at the table but also the opportunity to lead it. #UNGA

  • “U.N. peacekeeping is not only a lifesaving tool – it is a smart investment.” From Cambodia to East Timor, El Salvador to the Ivory Coast and Namibia, peacekeepers have helped countries move from conflict to peace, at a fraction of the cost of military operations worldwide. “But no matter how effective or efficient operations may be, peacekeeping will only succeed if the world supports it.” Read more from United Nations 🇺🇳 Secretary-General António Guterres in his op-ed ➡️ https://lnkd.in/enuhPwpq

#WomenPeaceSecurity

  • "We must report [sexual exploitation and abuse] – some people are left with lasting trauma." – Guy Kibira, North Kivu Youth Leader on Radio Okapi An effective reporting system is the first line of defense against abuse. ➡️ Ensure assistance is available for victims and children fathered by peacekeepers, including through a dedicated Trust Fund. ➡️ Investigate alleged perpetrators, including military contingents, and hold them accountable, including through repatriation. ➡️ Strengthen policies and protocols, and our joint investigative capacities with Member States. ➡️ Work with communities and partners to ensure reporting pathways are available and trusted. ➡️ Publicly report on allegations and paternity claims as we receive them as well as their status in our public database. #HonouringOurValues MONUSCO

  • The International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world on September 15 each year. Democracy, like peace, is not only a goal but a process. It can only thrive through the active participation of the international community, governments, civil society and individuals. Together, we can turn the ideal of democracy into a foundation for lasting peace that benefits everyone, everywhere. “At a time when democracy and the rule of law are under assault by disinformation, division and shrinking civic space, these efforts are more vital than ever.”

  • Meet Lena Ellen Becker🇩🇪, a #German justice advisor and #TrailblazingWoman Award nominee. Lena treats women's rights as central to sustainable peacebuilding. Deployed to the Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), her legal reform efforts in #SouthSudan seek to simultaneously address symptoms and root causes of conflict. Understanding that unresolved crimes - including rape and murder - create cycles of revenge between individuals and communities, #UNMISS' mobile courts offer remote communities access to justice and legitimate resolution pathways. Meanwhile, in Warrap State, Lena's consultations with over 300 locals, authorities, and leaders support the reform of customary laws. These laws, which date from 1975, frequently overlook victims rights in serious crime while reinforcing patriarchal norms that trap women in cycles of vulnerability. While mobile courts provide immediate relief, customary law reform addresses root causes while respecting community ownership of solutions. The result is structural change that prevents future conflicts. In South Sudan, this convergence of rule of law and women's rights offers a template for justice as a tool for peace. • Youth are pivotal in shaping a peaceful future. United Nations Peacekeeping actively engages young people in dialogue and decision-making processes, ensuring their perspectives and ideas are at the core of sustainable peace efforts. United Youth of Cyprus recently brought together young Cypriots and internationals at Ledra Palace Hotel to reimagine a common future for the island. They discussed reunification, shared identity, and planned community projects for change. Through interactive activities, they built connections and exchanged ideas on reunification, Cypriot identity, citizenship rights, and gender representation. #YouthLead / #UNFICYP / United Nations Youth Office 📸 UNFICYP/Peter Šulgan
