VELCO's vision is to create a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model.
About us
VELCO is Vermont’s statewide electric transmission provider whose sights are set on creating a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model. Formed in 1956 when local Vermont utilities established the nation’s first “transmission only” company to access clean hydro power from New York, VELCO remains unique in two important ways: 1. Our ownership comprises the state’s 17 distribution utilities and a public benefits corporation; and, 2. our for-profit status is structured to return cooperative-like value to our owners, their customers, and every Vermonter. VELCO’s system now includes: 740 miles of transmission lines; 55 substations, switching stations and terminal facilities; 13,000 acres of rights-of-way; a statewide emergency service radio system; and, a 1,600-mile fiber optic network that monitors and controls the electric system and helps to deliver broadband services to Vermonters. Headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, VELCO employees strive to give Vermont’s utilities and their customers a reliable high-voltage grid, a strong unified voice on regional energy issues, and continued access to safe, reliable, cost-effective electricity.

The Middlebury Fire Department stopped by our Middlebury Substation this week for a walkthrough led by VELCO team members—ensuring preparedness and best safety practices in the unlikely event of an emergency. The timing couldn’t be more fitting, as it’s National Fire Prevention Week! We’re grateful for our community partners and their commitment to safety, awareness, and readiness. 🔥👨🚒

Our line crew has been hard at work on our HVDC (high-voltage direct current) line, replacing insulators at a site fittingly called “The Top of the World” overlooking the Connecticut River. 🍂⚡ With crisp fall air and stunning foliage as the backdrop, it doesn’t get much better than this. Great work, team! 👏

⚡️ Last week, our team had the privilege of connecting with the Highgate Volunteer Fire Department for a tour of our Highgate Substation. The evening kicked off with pizza and an electrical safety discussion led by VELCO's Field Services Manager, Abe Fitch, followed by a walkthrough of the substation with VELCO team members Dennis Reisterer, Jacob Reed, Dylan Moore, and Abe. To top it off, Dylan and Abe even got to try on the firefighters’ SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus)! A big thank-you to the Highgate Fire Department for joining us and to our VELCO team for helping make it an educational and memorable night. 🚒💡
