Water conservation is a common and necessary element of water supply management but may prove to be insufficient to meet future water demand. Mayra A. Jimenez, Communications & Community Outreach Manager at Veolia, joins the “Western Water Supplies” panel during the United States Conference of Mayors Fall Water Council Meeting. Moderated by Livermore Mayor John P. Marchand, the panel will discuss the current water supply of the Colorado River and how annual water allocations are spurring western cities to secure long-term water security while also addressing the pressures of population growth, economic development and the expansion of data centers. At Veolia, we understand the critical importance of reliable and sustainable water management solutions. Our expertise spans the entire water cycle, from sourcing and treatment to distribution, reuse and optimization. The City of Holyoke, Mass., recently approved a 10-year partnership agreement with Veolia to operate and upgrade the municipal wastewater treatment plant on the banks of the Connecticut River with AI-enabled Hubgrade technology. As the first city in the northeast United States using the Hubgrade digital platform for wastewater treatment, Holyoke will benefit from Veolia's AI-enabled predictive technology, robotics, digital twins and 3D virtual reality systems to analyze system performance. The team can use Hubgrade’s insights to reduce energy consumption, chemical use and asset maintenance costs, while extending the useful life of expensive equipment. The Holyoke Wastewater Treatment Plant is capable of processing up to 17.5 million gallons of wastewater per day, currently serving 40,000 homes and businesses in Western Massachusetts with capacity for growth. At Veolia, we take on a leadership role to proactively balance the needs of the environment and human progress. This includes immediate action to address habitat loss and promote biodiversity, as well as implementing long-term strategies to clean up and protect essential resources, reduce carbon emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. We work with our customers to identify opportunities on their sites where we can set up projects that help plants and animals thrive. In Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, we worked with a customer in the pharmaceutical industry to transform 40 acres of unused land into valuable wildlife habitat: a monarch butterfly garden certified by the North American Butterfly Association. After invasive European buckthorn was removed and replaced with native tree saplings and milkweed, the area evolved into a flourishing wildflower meadow. The team then added a bug hotel to provide winter shelter for solitary bee species.
