🧪 [ENG] What if we convert our former viral enemies into therapeutic allies against cancer? The search for more effective and safer therapies remains a fundamental challenge in oncology. For the first time, this research led by Sara Cuadrado-Castaño demonstrates the therapeutic potential of certain avulaviruses other than Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV). The most relevant being Avian Paramyxovirus 4 (APMV-4) in murine models of melanoma and colorectal cancer, two highly aggressive tumors, due to intratumoral administration of APMV-4 achieved complete remissions, significantly prolonged survival, and, importantly, induced long-term antitumor immune memory, providing protection against tumor relapse. These findings establish APMV-4 as a strongest oncolytic candidate capable of overcoming the limitations of previously employed viruses and leads to new possibilities for the development of advanced virotherapies in cancer. [ENG]  And after the third line? In colorectal cancer, treatments are typically divided into three lines based on how the disease progresses. These include surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy—used individually or in combination—but they can be toxic, lead to resistance and don’t work for everyone.  After going through all three lines, many patients are left with no effective therapeutic options, moving instead into palliative care. This reality highlights an urgent need for innovative approaches, like oncolytic virus therapies, that can go beyond conventional strategies and help fill a critical gap for patients who currently have no remaining alternatives. . [ESP] ¿Y después de la tercera línea? En cáncer colorrectal, los tratamientos se estructuran en tres líneas según la evolución de la enfermedad. Incluyen cirugía, quimioterapia e inmunoterapia, de forma individual o combinada, pero pueden ser tóxicas y generar resistencias, además de que no todos los pacientes responden.  Tras fracasar las tres líneas, muchos se quedan sin opciones terapéuticas eficaces, pasando a cuidados paliativos. [ENG] According to the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, 2,577 new cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in Castilla y León in 2024. Salamanca ranked as the fourth province in the region with the highest number of cases, reporting 364 new diagnoses, and its incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants was the third highest, following prostate and breast cancer. The province recorded 173 deaths, accounting for 16.7% of all cancer-related fatalities and by 2050 annual deaths are expected to reach nearly 250, a scenario that demands placing it at the forefront of public health priorities. . [ESP] Según la Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, en 2024 se diagnosticaron 2.577 nuevos casos de cáncer colorrectal en Castilla y León. Salamanca fue la 4.ª provincia más incidente de la comunidad, con 364 nuevos diagnósticos, cuya tasa de incidencia por cada 100.000 habitantes es la tercera, tras próstata y mama. La mortalidad provincial alcanzó 173 fallecidos, lo que representa el 16,7 % del total de muertes por cáncer, y se estima que en 2050 rozarán las 250 anuales, un escenario que obliga a colocar esta realidad en el centro de la agenda sanitaria.

[ENG] Colorectal Cancer: rising pressure in Spain. According to the AECC, colorectal cancer was the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Spain in 2024, with 41,167 new cases—accounting for nearly 15% of all cancer diagnoses. It led to over 15,000 deaths, with a mortality rate of 13.7% among all cancer-related deaths, making it the second deadliest cancer. It is also the third most prevalent type of cancer in the country, following breast and prostate cancer. A sustained rise in incidence is expected, which will demand more effective responses in prevention and innovation. . [ESP] Cáncer colorrectal: presión creciente en España. Según la AECC, el cáncer colorrectal fue el más diagnosticado en España en 2024, con 41.167 nuevos casos, representando cerca del 15 % de todos los diagnósticos oncológicos. Conllevó más de 15.000 fallecimientos, con una tasa de mortalidad del 13,7 % sobre el total de los mismos por cáncer, situándose como el segundo más letal. Además, es el tercer tipo de cáncer más prevalente en el país, solo por detrás del de mama y próstata. Se prevé un aumento sostenido de la incidencia que exigirá respuestas más eficaces en prevención e innovación.

Colorectal cancer ranks as the third most common cancer worldwide, accounting for 9.6% of all cancer cases and a similar mortality rate (9.3%), surpassed only by lung cancer. According to the WHO, incidence rates are expected to rise, and by 2040, global cases could reach nearly 3 million—with the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and Brazil together accounting for more cases than the rest of the world combined. This represents a serious social and health challenge, further complicated by persistent epidemiological disparities. While the OECD reports that annual spending on cancer overall stands at 449 billion euros, they warn that current trends are likely unsustainable over the long-term. . [ESP] Cáncer colorrectal: un desafío global prioritario.  El cáncer colorrectal se sitúa como el tercero más incidente a nivel mundial, representando el 9,6% de los casos de cáncer y una mortalidad similar (9,3%), solo superado por el cáncer de pulmón. Según la OMS, se estima que la tasa de incidencia aumentará y en 2040, la incidencia global ascenderá a casi 3 millones de casos, concentrando Estados Unidos, Europa, China, Japón y Brasil una suma superior a la del resto de países combinados. Esto supone una problemática social y sanitaria grave ya que además también existe desigualdad epidemiológica. El gasto invertido en cáncer en general anualmente, según la OCDE, es de 449.000M € aunque consideran que será insostenible a largo plazo.
