It was a SMASHING time at the Global Gardens Chicago Green Corn Festival this weekend 🎃🔨 Thank you to everyone who came out to compost their pumpkins and enjoy the event! Illinois is the largest producer of pumpkins in the US with over 40% of our country’s pumpkins coming from the state. It is imperative that we compost our pumpkins to help return those nutrients to our soils to grow more pumpkins for next year. Thank you to SCARCE for their leadership on this issue and Jessica Davis for partnering with WasteNot on this event!

🎃 Excited to see a blog post I helped create go live! It has been a great experience learning the inner workings of commercial composting and seeing all the different parts that go into providing such an excellent service. WasteNot, Inc. is innovative and always looking for more opportunities to be more sustainable. Seeing the process from idea to product launch makes everything I'm learning in class really come to life! As spooky season turns into holiday season, this is a great, easy way to be a little gentler on the earth. 🍫🍬🎃 https://lnkd.in/g24HBksU

WasteNot is proud to be partnering with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office on a compost pilot program for food scraps from the Department of Corrections’ daily food preparation. “There’s a transformative power of working with your hands and this program adds another dimension. When individuals learn to grow food, prepare meals, and return food waste back into the earth, they gain skills that foster both self-sufficiency and sustainability, a never-ending cycle,” said Sheriff Thomas J. Dart. WasteNot’s founder and CEO, Liam Donnelly, led the training of Central Kitchen workers on composting guidelines and limiting contamination. Through the first six weeks, over 50,000 pounds of food scraps have been kept out of landfills thanks to the pilot program.
