Nourishing people and the planet.

About us

Whole Foods was founded in 1980 on the belief that where food comes from, and how it’s grown, matters. It meant creating quality standards, working with suppliers who achieve them, and sharing that information with our customers. And it radically changed the way people understood and shopped for food. The result has been the highest quality natural and organic products, an unmatched experience in more than 500+ stores, with a passionate team of over 90,000 team members, 5 percent of our total net profits given back to our communities each year, and millions of customers who put their trust in us every day.

Author of The Whole Story. Out now. Entrepreneur, Conscious Capitalist, Co-founder of Whole Foods Market, and CEO of Love.Life.

Entrepreneurs often share an immediate bond. Our circumstances may be very different, but we’re wired the same way. We look out into the world and see opportunity. Twenty years ago, I sat in a circle with about ten women in a small village in the high country of Guatemala. Their favorite topic of conversation was how they planned to use their next infusion of capital to grow their businesses. I could relate—there was nothing I loved more than talking about the growth of Whole Foods Market. The women in this picture (alongside Philip Sansone) were among the very first recipients of microcredit loans through Whole Foods’ newly launched Whole Planet Foundation, offering an early glimpse of the transformative work the foundation would go on to do. Their humor and enthusiasm were infectious, and their pride in their growing businesses was inspiring. Listening to their stories filled me with gratitude, appreciation, and deep inspiration. I truly felt like I was watching them change the narrative for themselves, their families, and their communities. Today, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Whole Foods Market Foundation, I’m proud of the 1.3 million people around the world who have been empowered through the Foundation’s work. Their courage, optimism, and hard work are a powerful reminder of the incredible impact that can unfold when we invest in people’s potential. There’s probably nothing we have done in our history at Whole Foods Market that has raised the morale of the organization more than the work of Whole Planet Foundation. #WFMF20 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gSma7Qkx

  • Coffee cultivation can provide a path to prosperity for growers around the world, but it takes a remarkable effort to get that high-quality coffee into customers’ cups. Our sourcing philosophy pushes us to use coffee and tea production as an engine for further success. This ensures that growers, imports, exports and customers all benefit from each cup. Follow along to hear how we, our suppliers and our partners at Allegro Coffee Company work together to make this happen. 🎥: https://lnkd.in/gTr2sfxi #WholeStory #Coffee #TeamWFM

Our team had the joy of celebrating Diwali in partnership with Truly Indian (ADF Foods)! ✨ We began with a beautiful lighting ceremony — a powerful symbol of the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The celebration continued with incredible food by Truly Indian, vibrant music and dance, intricate henna, and even a fun lesson on how to wrap a saree! A heartfelt thank you to Rasa Kumar and the Truly Indian team for sharing your culture and traditions with us. It was a wonderful reminder of the beauty of connection, community, and celebration. Happy Diwali!🕯️🌟

  • "My career path started in 1986 at Mrs. Gooch's. I chose to work there because I wanted to do something that would make a difference in people's lives, as well as mine. Little did I know that decision would lead to a 40-year journey with #TeamWFM. I have proudly been a part of 29 stores in my career. When Whole Foods Market acquired Mrs. Gooch’s in 1993, I was selected to build and open the West Los Angeles store. In 2005, I was promoted to Vice President of Operations and worked on company mergers and expansions in Arizona and opening our first store in Hawaii. In 2008, I decided to head back to the stores as a Store Team Leader and began raising my young family. Along the way, Whole Foods has always nurtured my ability to create and innovate while learning and growing. Being a good leader means you must be a good listener and lead with love and compassion; always have an open heart and mind. Change happens — it’s important to learn to embrace it and move forward. With Whole Foods, I've seen a lot of change, but I've learned how to honor our past while welcoming the future. In life and in business, when we hit our goals, we celebrate with everyone. I love food and people, so the last few decades have been quite the ride with the communities they've create for me. I’m grateful to have been around such great food and learned so much from even better people over the last 40 years. Whole Foods has enriched my life and allowed me to make an impact in the lives of others." - George Khoury, Store Team Leader #NSO #NourishPeople #NourishWellbeing

  • "I immigrated from the state of Kerala in India when I was five. Kerala has a large Christian population, and I was raised in the Indian Orthodox faith. Growing up in New York, my world was filled with Christmas carols and Easter celebrations. Twenty years ago, I married into a family with Hindu traditions which opened my eyes to the magic of Diwali. Now, our home glows with both diyas and Christmas lights, and our lives are richer for embracing both traditions. I see this same beautiful blending of cultures every day within Whole Foods Market which adds to our collective story. Not only do we fuse traditions, as a family we love to fuse recipes. I remember making my own version of pumpkin samosas for Thanksgiving many years ago. This year we are adding in the trend of Dubai chocolate into the Mithai or sweets that are shared during the Diwali celebrations. I am also crafting paper lanterns to share with friends. What strikes me most is how these celebrations share the universal language of light, family, and joy. The glow of candles, whether in a church or temple, and the tasty foods of holiday feasts, these traditions remind us that celebration transcends boundaries." - Shyno Chacko, Principal Retail Operations Process Manager #Diwali #NourishConnections #TeamWFM

  • Representing a variety of roles and backgrounds from our stores in Washington, D.C., 23 Team Members came together for a Field Day full of learning and community building, hosted by our very own Nicole Davia: "Our Field Days embody the heart of our mission. They're not just outings: They're meaningful experiences that connect our Team Members with our entire supply chain ecosystem. From understanding our vital partnerships with suppliers to witnessing how products reach our shelves and how unsold items benefit our community, it's a powerful, full-circle journey. I'm incredibly proud of how our team engaged, inquired and rolled up their sleeves to make a tangible difference." Team Members spent the day: 💚 Connecting with the community and packing meals with our friends at Francis on the Hill, an affiliate of Following Francis 🎣 Visiting with the father-son duo at Ivy City Smokehouse, Inc, a leader in the movement toward sustainable fisheries (and home of delicious smoked salmon) 🤝 Meeting representatives from several local suppliers that have benefited from Union Kitchen, a local incubator and accelerator committed to supporting local brands “This hands-on involvement in our community truly exemplifies our purpose and values in action. What a great day. My cup is full.” — Nicole Davia, Senior Vice President of Northeast Operations #FieldDay #NourishPurpose #NourishConnection #TeamWFM

When we ask our Team Members what they love most about working at Whole Foods Market, our Quality Standards are a consistent factor. We make these commitments because we believe people deserve something better: high-quality, delicious food that nourishes people and the planet. As our CEO Jason said, this isn't a checkbox; it's who we are. #TeamWFM

Vice President, Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores, and CEO, Whole Foods Market

Since opening our first store 45 years ago, Whole Foods Market has been the leader for standards across the industry. We’ve continued to elevate our Quality Standards, raising the bar for what it means to be on our shelves. In 2017 when we joined Amazon, we banned around 80 food ingredients. Today, our list has expanded to more than 300 banned food ingredients. We’ve also introduced 10 new Quality Standards and commitments in that time period, including: 1. Animal Welfare Standards for Laying Hens  2. Canned Tuna Standards  3. Regenerative Agriculture Claims Policy  4. Sourcing Standards for Canned Seafood  5. Pollinator Health Policy for Fresh Produce & Floral  6. Seafood Code of Conduct  7. Quality Standards for Seasonings  8. Quality Standards for Standalone Oils  9. Expanded Animal Welfare Policy to include our entire Meat Department  10. Exclusive Brand Coffee and Tea Commitments Whole Foods Market also remains the only certified organic national retailer, and we’ve grown our leadership in that space with organic product sales up more than 60% compared to 2019. A higher percentage of our total sales now come from organic items than ever before. In addition to organic, we’re proud to offer 300+ certified regenerative products and more than 400 additional items with vetted regenerative claims. Our Exclusive Brands portfolio has grown 50% since 2019 and now includes nearly 2,000 organic SKUs, including the first Regenerative Organic Certified private label products — from dried mango and lentils to coffee and almond flour.  Our Quality Standards aren’t just a checkbox. They are the foundation of our brand and what set us apart—it’s  who we are.

"My career path with Whole Foods Market began in May 2018. I was first drawn to join when I was a third-party vendor and saw the sincere environment that was cultivated for guests and workers alike. One day, something magical happened: The Store Team Leader and both Associate Store Team Leaders approached me and expressed that they would love for me to join the Pacific Coast Highway Whole Foods team. I was later hired to work in the Grocery department and enjoyed every second of it. Seven years later, I excelled in my role as the Grocery Team Trainer and am now the Store Trainer. In 2022, I had the pleasure of being selected to represent California at the Culture Champions Summit in Austin, Texas. As a Culture Champion Ambassador, this was such a rewarding experience for me — meeting so many like-minded individuals from around the world with the same goals, vision and aspirations. It was so enlightening, and in that moment I realized I was where I needed and wanted to be. One of my mottos as a leader is that no one is better than anyone else, no matter what titles we hold. We all do the same thing and that's taking care of our customers and one another. Gaining trust and respect can go a long way in building long-lasting relationships, so as Store Trainer, I ensure I'm creating welcoming, safe and supportive environments so my Team Members know they have someone actively championing their success. I am deeply passionate about what I do and how I serve and fulfill my purpose every day. At Whole Foods, I feel valued and part of a team that truly cares about people and the planet as much as I do. The supportive culture makes it easy and a joy to come to work and grow. It's a proud feeling, knowing the work I do contributes to healthier communities and sustainable choices." - S. Joy Singletary-Harrison, Store Trainer #NourishPeople #NourishWellbeing #TeamWFM
