A 2024 study from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that U.S. data center electricity demand jumped from 58 TWh in 2014 to 176 TWh in 2023—and could reach 325 to 580 TWh by 2028. This explosive growth highlights that reconceiving water strategy isn’t optional—it’s critical. Technology infrastructure—data centers, semiconductor fabs, EV battery plants—relies not only on power and connectivity, but also on water. As these industries scale, water has quietly become one of the most underappreciated gating factors in reliability, cost, risk, and speed to market. Developers who treat water as an afterthought risk delays, cost premiums, regulatory hurdles, and performance issues. Those who embed water strategy early gain advantages in efficiency, resilience, and stakeholder trust. Woolpert data center design expert Neil Sheehan and water management experts Marina Kopytkovskiy, Guy Carpenter, and James Schlaman PE, ENV SP discuss how an integrated architecture, engineering, and geospatial (AEG) approach can help clients build water strategies that are multi-phase, adaptable, and scalable for long-term growth. 🌊 Big Milestone for 3D Coastal Mapping! 🗺️ Kia ora koutou! Congratulations to Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) on the successful completion of Season 1 of the 3D Coastal Mapping programme - with over 1,900 km² now mapped! 🎉 This includes over 1,154 Km² of coastline captured by Woolpert over the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, using advanced Airborne Bathymetric Lidar with the Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon HawkEye-5 Bathymetric Lidar Sensor. Despite some weather curveballs, our dedicated crews chased the sunshine to capture, process, and deliver stunning coastal data for LINZ. Our team were proud to have provided the first dataset to be published on the LINZ Data Service portal, featuring Doubtless Bay and Mangōnui Harbour in Northland, with more to follow throughout the year. 🔍 Explore the progress on the updated interactive map 📅 Next mapping season scheduled to kick off in the coming weeks Congratulations to LINZ and a huge thanks to everyone involved — we’re just getting started! Riparian areas are transition zones between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, such as streambanks, floodplains, and wetlands. When healthy, these areas play a vital role in maintaining and preserving high quality inland waters. Establishing minimum buffer widths is essential for reducing disturbance in riparian zones and for preserving their ecological functions. Woolpert Environmental Director Kyle Mckay recently contributed to the peer-reviewed article, “Developing predictive models of riparian buffer efficacy with meta-analysis,” which explores how riparian buffer width influences water quality and biodiversity outcomes. “Numerous studies have shown that riparian zones are essential for maintaining water quality and supporting biodiversity. Historically, decisions about buffer width have relied on qualitative assessments, which can vary significantly across regions,” Kyle shared. “This analysis compiles global data to establish quantitative thresholds that link riparian buffer width to measurable outcomes. These new predictive models enable communities to define the ecological and social benefits they want from riparian zones and to set evidence-based conservation targets accordingly.” The study was led by Rosamar Ayala Torres and supported by the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Ecosystem Management and Restoration Research Program. There are few regions of the United States as defined by or as dependent upon their coastal waters as the state of Florida. At a time when shifting climate patterns are affecting coastal regions around the world in myriad, often undetermined ways, and with a need to understand coastal vulnerabilities and other issues, Woolpert and partners embarked on the ambitious Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative, a multifaceted project led by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to create a high-resolution seafloor surface model of the state’s coastal waters. The resulting model will enhance navigation, habitat protection, and coastal resilience, while deepening understanding of Florida’s marine environment. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Know you are loved. You are appreciated. And we are so glad you are here.
The 10th of October is World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, focuses on access to services. It’s an important reminder that everyone deserves the opportunity to protect and nurture their mental wellbeing, no matter what they’re facing. At Bluesky, we recognise the importance of mental health and are committed to championing wellbeing across our team. That’s why we offer all employees free and confidential access to our Employee Assistance Programme, available whenever they need it, including 24/7 emotional assistance, short-term structured counselling, and practical advice from trained specialists. As well as the EAP access, Bluesky employees can also take part in daily workouts via an online platform with a personal trainer and, over the last four weeks, the team have been taking part in the Woolpert Global Walking Challenge, part of Woolpert’s Wellness Month. Rain or shine, we've been racking up our steps, and being out and about in the fresh air, enjoying nature is a well-known benefit for positive health and wellbeing. Teams who walked over 1.2 million steps were entered into a prize draw adding a fun incentive to get active while promoting the mental health benefits of walking. And of course, a little healthy competition never hurts! Check out some of the Bluesky team selfies below. #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #walkingchallenge #eap #employeeassistanceprogramme #walking

When planning your move from Cityworks to Trimble Unity, integrations are an important part of the journey. Here’s what you need to know: 🔹API Compatibility: Are your current integrations built using APIs, or are they hardcoded/database triggers? Only API-based integrations are supported in Unity. Direct database connections and triggers must be replaced. 🔹Web Services & Webhooks: Unity’s webhook environment is evolving, but there are still limitations. If your workflows rely on triggers that can’t be replicated with webhooks, you’ll need to plan for alternative solutions. 🔹Third-Party Apps: Not all third-party applications are Unity-ready. Some legacy integrations may not yet be compatible. It’s critical to check with your app vendors about their Unity roadmap. 🔹 Future-Proofing: Consider tools like FME, Velosimo, or SpatialDNA to help bridge integration gaps and make future migrations easier. Attending Trimble Innovate next week? Make sure to book a free 30-minute consultation with our team during the conference, plus a 1-hour follow-up session with one of our experts: https://lnkd.in/gQAqi_t8 #TrimbleInnovate #TrimbleUnity #CityworksMigration #AssetManagement Brent Wilson Mark Seastead
