“Malaria is holding my pupils back every day. It can leave you in bed for days or weeks, so they will miss many classes and struggle to catch up. Even when they’re back, they can still be tired and suffer for weeks afterwards meaning everyone else pulls even further away.”    Aziza’s role as a teacher is greatly impacted by malaria, Aziza often has very sick children in her classes that require urgent hospital treatment, which can be very stressful for her and other students who see their classmates very sick with malaria.     School absenteeism has a significant impact on learning outcomes for children with many having to repeat a year and exams. 60% of Africa’s population is under 25, one of the continent’s greatest economic strengths, but malaria threatens this potential with missed school, lost workdays and reduced lifetime earnings. Our new report, published by the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) and Malaria No More UK, reveals that a severe malaria funding cut, which would collapse prevention efforts, could result in school-age children facing a $19.7 billion loss in future earnings by 2030. Every malaria case not only steals opportunities from the next generation but also undermines national productivity. Our new report is out, and the findings speak for themselves; Severe funding cuts to malaria could risk a resurgence costing Africa $83 billion in lost GDP by 2030, and 990,000 more lives lost, including 750,000 children under five. Continued investment in The Global Fund is vital to reach zero malaria. It provides more than half of all international financing for malaria programs, and in countries where it invests, malaria deaths have dropped by 29% between 2002 and 2024, helping to support growing economies. Without the Global Fund, malaria deaths would have increased by 94% over the same period. #ZeroMalaria

We are calling on world leaders to step up and continue to invest in malaria and the Global Fund. This report highlights the pivotal role the Global Fund plays in the fight against malaria. 🦟 In 2024, the Global Fund distributed 162 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect families from malaria. 🏠 27.2 million people were protected by indoor residual spraying in 2024. 👶 50.9 million children were covered by seasonal malaria chemoprevention in 2024. 🤰 17.8 million pregnant women received preventive therapy for malaria in 2024. This year, Timor-Leste, Georgia and Suriname joined the growing list of countries and territories declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization bringing the total to 48. But progress isn’t guaranteed. Only by fully funding The Global Fund can we keep moving towards ending the world’s deadliest disease. The fight against malaria has a new tool, spatial repellents, now recommended by the World Health Organization alongside bed nets.    The newly approved spatial repellents, backed by Unitaid-funded research, emit active ingredients into the air to kill mosquitoes, deter them from entering treated spaces, and prevent them from locating and biting human hosts. Suriname is officially malaria-free, the first country in the Amazon region to earn World Health Organization certification. 🇸🇷🌿 After nearly 70 years of sustained effort across remote rainforests and diverse communities, Suriname has shown what’s possible with strong leadership, universal access to healthcare, and community-driven action. This historic milestone is a massive win for Suriname, and proves that even in challenging contexts, malaria elimination is achievable.
