Being a moral company

Being a moral company

- One of the earliest ethical debates was in Plato's "Republic." Plato's older brother Glaucon tells a story about a poor shepherd named Gyges. In this story, Gyges finds a magic ring. While wearing the ring he accidentally discovers that it allows him to become invisible. So, he uses this power to seduce the local queen. He then kills the king, and takes over his kingdom. Plato's brother argues that any man who found the ring would've done the same thing. He says that this access to unlimited power will lead anyone, even someone who's virtuous, to look out for their own self-interest. If someone had the power to become invisible, then they would be free to act immoral. In the end, everyone would be corrupted by the power of the ring. For hundreds of years, this story has influenced othered authors. It became part of H.G. Wells in "The Invisible Man." And if you're a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, you'll recognize this theme…
