- When you think of the cost of accommodations, I encourage you to first consider the cost of not providing them. Lost productivity and lost goodwill and even a lost employee. Employees who are provided a reasonable accommodation are less likely to leave the job. It costs an average of 10 to 30% of an annual salary to replace most lost employees, but that number can go as high as 200% for highly skilled employees. The average cost of an accommodation is about $500 and over half of all accommodations cost nothing. So what is an accommodation? An accommodation modifies the job or the work environment to enable employees with disabilities to perform their essential job functions and enjoy equal access to job benefits without imposing undue hardship on the employer.
