- Thank you for joining this course on equity in the workplace. Equity is a term that is not always understood. The purpose of this course is to help you understand the difference between equality and equity, and why equity is needed if we are to create diverse, inclusive cultures, where everyone feels like they belong. You will more often today hear this work referred to as diversity, equity, and inclusion. We have been intentionally working on diversity and inclusion for more than 40 years, but equity, especially in the United States, is a newer concept and not without its controversy, which we will discuss. I am Mary-Frances Winters, president and CEO of The Winters Group, a global diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting firm. We work with organizations to design and implement their diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies. During this course, I want to engage you in a conversation. I want you to be able to reflect on your own lived experiences, and at the end of this course be able to articulate how equity can help everyone to reach their full potential in the workplace. And I've provided a reflection guide that we will use throughout the course where we will stop, and I will ask you to reflect on questions for a few moments, and then we will resume the course. I so appreciate your interest in learning more about equity. So, let's get started.
