Handling difficult questions

- One of my clients is a senior leadership team member of a large multinational. And he's pretty efficient at communicating. And he feels pretty accomplished. He's written a couple of books, but he said, "Gina, the hardest thing I have is, when I get a question that I wasn't expecting and I didn't prepare for it. What do I do in the moment?" I said, "Ha, power of three." Either park, pivot or unpack. Park is the first thing you can do when someone asks you a question you weren't expecting. You say, "That's a great question." "I really think that's important." "I think that I'm going to buy myself some time." What you're doing is you're parking with a line but you're not parking in a way that is indicating to the audience that you don't value the question. You can even use lines that are prepared. Like I said, "That's a great question." "That's really important." "We need to understand that a bit more." "Let me go…
