Influencing upward
- Have you ever been in a situation where you're trying to win someone over, but they just can't seem to shake their skepticism? Here's a story about my business partner who had a knack for turning even the toughest skeptics into enthusiastic supporters. He had a secret weapon that he'd use anytime he noticed a hint of doubt. He would call out the elephant in the room. He'd acknowledged the potential objections head on, empathize, and then redirect the conversation in a way that showed he was in tune with their concerns. For example, I know that you might be feeling a bit skeptical right now, and that's a good thing. It shows that you're doing your due diligence. You might be thinking this is not going to work. If you notice agreement or even a nod, then you know you're on the right track. Then you address their concerns. When you're upfront and you show that you understand where the other person's coming from, it can disarm their defenses and make them more open to hearing your ideas. So go ahead, call out the elephant in the room and watch as your influence skyrockets.
