- The general public often associates Power BI with the interactive data visualizations that display on the front end of the model. But in reality, this is just the report layer that pulls from the underlying data in the Semantic model. Much like an iceberg, much of Power BI sits under the water and out of the purview of even the end user who only sees the 10% of its volume above the water in the report layer. 90% of the work that goes into making a Power BI model successful above water sits underwater like an iceberg. The Semantic model lets us connect queries to data sources, and transform them before loading them into the model and connecting them to other tables in the model view. It also lets us build out DAX models as tables and columns, and even more importantly, measures for key calculations within Power BI.
