- Most data scientists fail to talk to the frontline team during the business understanding phase. The reason is that they assume that the best bet is to wait until there's a prototype and then do some kind of beta-testing. Now, let's be clear about who we're talking about. A frontline worker might be a nurse that's being sent by the model to check on a patient or repair person who after the model alerts them to a repair issue, climbs up a wind turbine to perform a check. Another reason that some data scientists skip this task is that they figure that the frontline worker is not the customer, so they should focus on the project sponsor. The problem is that if you earn their trust or at least don't violate their trust, the frontline team might describe the business problem in completely different terms than the project sponsor.
