- Aging is often equated with decline. As a result, ageism and ableism are frequently conflated and it's important to understand how these biases differ as well as how they intersect. Ageism is the systemic stereotyping and discrimination of people based solely on their age. Ageism includes how we think, how we feel and how we act towards others and can often result from a misunderstanding of aging as a singular process of decline. Ableism is when we place a value or judgment on physical or cognitive ability. Differences in ability are a normal part of the human experience. But ableism is predicated on the idea that people with disabilities are flawed and have less value than non-disabled people. Ageism and ableism intersect when we attribute capacity or incapacity to someone based on age. These widespread forms of bias can have a detrimental impact on our personal and professional lives.
