- As medical science has evolved, we've learned things like smoking, lack of sleep, and even being lonely, pose significant consequences to our health. Most of us know this, but I'll bet you didn't know that ageism is also a health risk. More than two decades of research have demonstrated that there are serious physical and psychological consequences associated with negative attitudes about aging. When we fear or dread our own aging, it produces physical and emotional stress in our bodies, that stress has short and long-term consequences, which can lead to disease, depression, and loneliness. Here are some of the facts. People with positive attitudes toward aging live an average of 7 1/2 years longer than those with negative attitudes. 7 1/2 years of your life are potentially wrapped up in how you feel about your own aging.
