- You'd think that most teams would be clear about their purpose and you'd be wrong. Studies reveal that even teams at the top frequently lack alignment, especially when it comes to strategic priorities. Teams that lack a clear and shared purpose almost never perform well, and it's the most common starting point for team coaching. Here are some practical questions that you can use to help them gain alignment around a shared purpose. What's the point of this team being here? Who cares whether you succeed or not? What makes them care? And if this team didn't exist, would somebody have to create it? In which case, would the purpose be the same? To get into greater depth, ask the team to consider purpose as having multiple levels. The team may need quite a lot of help in distinguishing between layers of need.
