Open Society Foundations’ Post

Congratulations to our founder, George Soros, on being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. President Biden is recognizing Soros for his lifelong commitment to advancing more just societies and promoting human rights around the world. A survivor of Nazi-occupied Hungary and then Communist repression, Soros has contributed more than $32 billion to advancing freedom and justice across the world. Beginning in 1979 with scholarships for Black South African students under apartheid, he pioneered a new model of philanthropy focused on direct collaboration with local communities. Anticipating the fall of Communism, he established his first foundation in Hungary and expanded efforts to support democratic reform across Eastern Europe. Over the next decade, his foundations grew to work in more than 100 countries to promote human rights and justice. In the United States, Soros has advanced racial justice, supported public health-based drug policy reform, revolutionized end-of-life care, and played a pivotal role in securing marriage equality nationwide—one of the most significant civil rights victories in modern American history. Open Society Chair Alex Soros will accept the Medal of Freedom on his father’s behalf today at the White House. #OpenSociety #GeorgeSoros #PresidentialMedalOfFreedom

Well-earned and deserved honor. George Soros’ philanthropy has advanced democracy and invested resources in those most proximate to the most intractable problems across the globe - including funding the launch of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement in 2008. Congrats, Sir! 🎉❤️🙏🏾🕊✊🏿🚀💐🔥🎉

So well deserved! A remarkable man with a keen understanding of human nature and the human condition (hence, challenges and opportunities and the importance of choices). I had the honour of engaging a number of times with the OSFs, and a few striking personal contacts. My first contact was when I was Legal Advisor to the OSCE HCNM and suggested creating a private trilingual university in Macedonia (mainly for Albanian-language HE - called the South East European University: https://www.seeu.edu.mk). He wasn't convinced at first, but became a key supporter. The idea was also to promote open society thinking... essentially Enlightenment ideas crucial for a reconciled and modern Macedonia. George prevailed upon doubters inside OSF and weighed in with important support. A vivid memory was when later we organised a mtg in NYC to support work by Max van der Stoel & I to get other IGOs to create dedicated mediation offices. I asked George to explain why he always supported Max. He called me for clarification, and told me he didn't quite know what Max did (!) but saw he had undoubted integrity and was highly effective. In short, he acted on judgement. He invested in Max; they shared a vision born of hard experience. Lessons for us all.

Freedom is a unique name for an award for you sir. If only all of us had access to your US government intelligence regarding actions against foreign nations we too could make billions. In crypto it's called front running, and word on the street your $ was made front running, via currency markets, Central Intelligence Agency disruptions of nation states.
