New Partnership with De Gruyter Brill for Academic Publishing

So will AI run us out of business? This was the main question I was preoccupied with for most of 2023 and into 2024. To be honest, I would have bet that AI would spell the end of human language services in 12 months. And then something surprising happened: clients learned how to use AI and, at the same time, continued coming back for fully human translation and editing services. There are many reasons for this (trust and reliability issues with AI, privacy concerns, higher quality outputs by humans, the stakes of publishing in competitive academic fora, and more), but in the end, we leaned on our very real and human connection and ongoing dialogue we maintain with our researchers and a deep understanding of the highs and lows of the publication journey. Against this backdrop, I am even more proud of our new partnership with De Gruyter Brill, which expands on our relationship with Brill over the last four years to provide author services to researchers in the humanities and social sciences. A big thank you to Pablo Dominguez Andersen, Dr. Manuela Gerlof, Maurits van den Boogert, Dominique De Roo, Anke Hermneuwöhner, Aaron Sanborn-Overby and all of our wonderful colleagues at De Gruyter Brill for your trust and cooperation.

Absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to publish my book with Oxford University Press! A busy few years ahead… (Tentatively) Titled ‘When Should an Algorithm Decide?’, the book explores the extent to which artificial intelligence technologies can (or should) replace the judicial role. It asks which aspects of judging disputes - understood as a fundamentally social and political activity - cannot be reliably or safely replicated by AI technologies. Exciting news from the Research Training Group "Literature and the Public Sphere" (GRK 2806) at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg! Last week we welcomed our second cohort of PhD researchers — and just in time, the DFG confirmed an additional funded position, raising the total number from 11 to 12 doctoral projects. I’m thrilled that three of these projects integrate Digital Humanities approaches and honored to be part of all three: Cristian Ortega Singer builds a multimodal poetry slam corpus, studying corporeality in text and performance. Charlotte Panuskova models digital social reading practices in the Czech Republic. Luise Prager explores German literary prizes and their dynamics through stylometric analysis. The new cohort brings together literary studies, data-driven approaches, and public discourse in ways that reflect the central aims of our Research Training Group. #DigitalHumanities #ComputationalLiteraryStudies #FAU
