🤖 Flexible assembly automation demands reliable and efficient localization for #mobile #robots, yet existing approaches often involve trade-offs. While #LiDAR #SLAM achieves high accuracy, mobile robots relying on prebuilt LiDAR maps for localization can struggle in dynamic shop-floor environments, where frequent changes quickly render maps outdated, highlighting the trade-off between accuracy and adaptability. In contrast, #5G NR-based positioning enables global localization (that is, estimating a robot’s position without a prior map or known starting pose) with minimal sensor overhead, a promising alternative for scalable automation where #5G infrastructure is already deployed. 💡 In this use case, we benchmarked 5G based positioning against #OptiTrack and #SLAM ground truth for mobile robotics in flexible assembly scenarios. The results highlight how 5G technologies can enable the localization of multiple robotic assets, estimating positions even before a map is available. This collaboration between the Manufacturing Vertical of TARGET-X at Werkzeugmaschinenlabor, WZL der RWTH Aachen University, and Ericsson marks another step toward the evolution of intelligent production systems beyond 5G. 🔗 #TARGETX #5G #MobileRobotics #FlexibleAssembly #WZL #Ericsson #6G #SNSJU #Innovation #Manufacturing 📍5G NR Indoor Positioning📍 In our third video of the campaign, we explore the use case of 5G NR in indoor positioning, particularly in the production industry. Discover our positioning trials, where objects are tracked using strategically placed indoor antennas. The applications of indoor positioning are vast, including machine navigation and the documentation of production steps. Our trials demonstrated a high accuracy of approximately 1 meter in about 90% of measurements! 🎥 Watch the video to learn more! Thank you, Bart Mellaerts, for the interesting insights! The Shuttle2X project has successfully concluded at Bosch Research, marking an important step toward connected and cooperative automated driving! Throughout the project, we explored how 5G NR sidelink communication can enhance vehicle perception and safety by enabling direct V2X exchanges between vehicles and infrastructure. By integrating sidelink-based connectivity with infrastructure sensing, we demonstrated how automated shuttles can share awareness data in real time and perceive beyond their onboard sensors. A great milestone for telecommunication-driven perception and connected mobility — made possible through strong collaboration across all partners! 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲2𝗫: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 🚌 After more than two years of collaboration, the journey of our #Shuttle2X project, funded by the 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy via TÜV Rheinland Group, has reached the finish line at Bosch Research in Renningen - and I am very proud of what the team has achieved! At the final event on our #RenningenResearchCampus, the Bosch Research team showcased the results of the common work: Together with our partners from FZI Research Center for Information Technology, Hochschule Heilbronn - Hochschule für Technik, Wirtschaft und Informatik, Keysight Technologies, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, SONAH, and Reusch Rechtsanwälte, TÜV SÜD, Schwarz Mobility Solutions GmbH, and local government representatives from the cities of Renningen and Böblingen - we tackled one key question: How can automated shuttles navigate complex urban environments safely and efficiently? 🚦🚗 Our live demos via digital twin simulations gave a glimpse into the future. The main result: 𝗮 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀. This approach helps automated shuttles “see” beyond obstacles - improving safety and traffic flow. 📣 A huge shoutout to everyone involved - for the expertise, the dedication, and the spirit of collaboration that made Shuttle2X a success. The Industrial Process and PV Systems Monitoring Group of the SEMS Department at IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya presented an advanced prototype system for the inspection of nanometric semiconductor layers at the 3rd edition of the Manufacturing Partnership Days, organised by the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA) at Brussels. The event brings together Horizon Europe projects under Cluster 4 – Digital, Industry and Space, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among leading European innovation initiatives. 👉 The presented system enables real-time evaluation of nanometric layers deposited on complex multilayer structures, allowing estimation of thickness and composition through a multimodal analytical approach combined with machine-learning-based self-learning algorithms. This technology provides a flexible and adaptable solution applicable to a wide range of industrial and research contexts, including photovoltaics, encapsulation technologies, and battery systems, where accurate thin-layer characterisation is essential. Designed for both laboratory use and in-line industrial integration, the system delivers fast and cost-efficient insights that are currently inaccessible through conventional techniques, which tend to be slow, expensive, and limited to specific cases. This prototype is the result of research led by IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya within the framework of the European project Platform-ZERO (Grant Agreement No. 101058459), funded by the Horizon Europe Programme. #IRECprojects #IRECevents To view or add a comment, sign in
