On day two, we lent a little more into the tensions and trade offs at #EUResearchSecurity2025 🔹️ There was a recognition that in a world of rising authoritarianism, systems that create too much reliance on government can create fragility - gov depts should aim to "remain relevant" rather than force connection 🔹️ "Protection of academic freedom is wavering" under a range of pressures and its important to consider the role of research security and how we evaluate "opportunities and risks" together to make holistic decisions 🔹️ Universities are complex places and "academics may identify more with their discipline or department" than the broader communities they belong too and that needs to be accounted for in our approach 🔹️ "Risk and threat are not the same thing" - we need to know the difference and act proportionately 🔹️ We should not make our partners "passive recipients of risk" - it's about reducing the overall risk, not just changing who is responsible for it On to day 3! #Research #Innovation #ResearchSecurity #ResponsibleResearch
