We are releasing a new knowledge transfer interview from our "Beyond Creation" series by Formare Culturala: I have been ”picking the brain” :) of two experts in culture-health policy: Kornelia Kiss (Research and Development, Culture Action Europe) and Rarița Zbranca (Programme Director, Cluj Cultural Centre/Centrul Cultural Clujean). The professional discussion explores the evidence base and policy frameworks connecting cultural participation to health outcomes. The discussion centers on the CultureForHealth report's systematic review of 8,000 studies with 310 included research papers, and the EU Open Method of Coordination's September 2025 report "Culture and Health: Time to Act" with strategic recommendations for member states. Key policy challenges addressed include funding gaps where culture-health projects fall between sectors—cultural funding prioritizes innovation while health funding questions eligibility—and the need for dedicated calls. The conversation references the CARE project's awareness campaign and the Culture for Health database with over 850 projects from across Europe and beyond, designed as a tool for artists and practitioners to search by art field or target group and learn from existing initiatives rather than reinventing approaches. The discussion tackles practical implementation questions: how culture-health programs typically run for around 8 to 10 sessions building group cohesion but then end without continuation pathways, the vision for cultural centers functioning like gyms offering multiple activities, and how to create sustainable infrastructure beyond project-based approaches.
