Accreditation Illusion: When Reports Shine Brighter Than Reality In today’s academic landscape, a curious irony is unfolding. A newly established institution — barely a few years into existence — proudly flashes an A++ accreditation score, while a time-tested, research-intensive, socially impactful institution struggles to secure the same badge of honor. The reason? Because the current evaluation system uses a uniform yardstick for all. It measures both the infant and the veteran by the same scale — ignoring factors like institutional age, mission, regional context, and maturity level. What results is a paradox where documentation outshines dedication. The younger institution, with sleek presentations, photo-rich reports, and polished metrics, appears flawless on paper. Meanwhile, the older one — rich in patents, community projects, and authentic data — often loses points for modest reporting systems or lack of cosmetic appeal. This reveals a deep structural loophole: the accreditation model values “how well you report” more than “how well you perform.” It’s time to reimagine the process through contextual and dynamic benchmarking, where evaluation adapts to an institution’s maturity, mission, and ecosystem. Continuous assessment, contextual scoring grids, and authenticity audits can restore fairness and credibility. Otherwise, we risk celebrating the best-documented rather than the best-performing institutions. #AccreditationParadox #QualityBeyondGrades #HigherEducationReform #TrueQualityMatters

When institutions want to make accreditation smarter, Jessica Shedd shows them how. As Assistant Provost for Assessment and Institutional Research at Tulane University, she leads with data — not just collecting it, but connecting it in innovative ways that reveal new insights about student learning and institutional performance. Jessica’s chapter, Innovative Use of National and State Data for Accreditation, in The Power of Strategic Accreditation, demonstrates how colleges and universities can move beyond compliance to uncover patterns that drive improvement. Her work proves that when data is used strategically, accreditation becomes less about reporting and more about revealing what really works. 📚 Learn more about the 80+ other contributing authors who’ve contributed to IEHE's books: https://lnkd.in/ghJKW9Di ✨ The Institute for Effectiveness in Higher Education® (IEHE) brings together forward thinkers through collaborative projects that surface innovative practices and elevate bold voices across higher ed. 👉 Want to gain your next advantage? Accreditation doesn’t have to be about compliance. Jessica Shedd’s work at Tulane University shows how national and state data, when used wisely, reveal patterns that fuel both accountability and innovation. Money follows mission when data becomes insight.

This is the second installment of my reflection on “The Power of Strategic Accreditation,” edited by Kristina Powers. For discussion of the first section of the book, see my previous post. One of the things that I appreciated about the chapters in this volume is the blend of big-picture discussion and hands-on suggestions. For example, in Chapter 4: Effectively Managing the Chaos of Multiple Accreditations at the Same Time, Jillian Huot provides a helpful explanation of the different types of #accreditation (institutional and specialized/programmatic) and the similarities and differences between them (74-78). Huot then discussing practical steps for approaching the accreditation process, including organization, involving various stakeholders, effective communication, and even standardizing naming conventions for supporting evidence files. Another example of very practical guidance is Chapter 7: Strategic Engagement of Faculty in Institutional and Programmatic Accreditation, by Mary Ann Coughlin & Valerie Martin Conley. They address how best to involve #faculty in accreditation working groups and leverage their knowledge and experience (145-154). Coughlin & Conley note that faculty who participate in accreditation gain institutional knowledge, build relationships with faculty and staff from across campus, and have the opportunity to provide input on a range of important concerns. Faculty participation also benefits the institution. In the authors’ words, “Accreditation processes can provide an opportunity to broaden their [faculty’s] horizons and break down silos by creating networking opportunities and exposing them to larger institutional issues” (159-160). Chapter 8: The Power of Collaborating and Leveraging Multiple Institutional Groups, by Sundra Kincey, discusses a full range of constituencies that should play a vital role in assessment: administration, faculty, staff, students, board of trustees, alumni, and other external stakeholders. 174-178). For the rest of my reflection on the book, see my upcoming post.
