Communities are set to benefit from better jobs and more opportunities in tech as 14 government-backed projects to support local tech sectors across the UK are unveiled. The Government’s £1 million Regional Tech Booster programme gets underway to support tech businesses and founders, and grow local tech ecosystems. We are proud to be delivering one of the Scotland pilot projects for Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's Regional Tech Booster programme. As part of the UK Tech Cluster Group, ScotlandIS will be running our 'Future Ready' programme for rural or remote communities across Scotland, aiming to break down barriers to opportunity for tech founders in these areas. The project strives to develop collaborative peer networks, provide targeted training, and connect isolated founders to national support. I’m honestly sick and tired of all the “EUROPE SUCKS AT TECH” talk. Apparently, if you’re not raising billions, you’re irrelevant. We’ve got red tape for days, funding rounds that move slower than a Monday morning coffee queue, and investors who still think “risk” is a dirty word. Half the time, startups have to navigate 27 different versions of bureaucracy just to sell their product across borders. And when someone does build something amazing, it’s only a matter of time before a US fund swoops in, buys it, and moves it to California. Still, that doesn’t mean we’re doomed!! It just means Europe makes things harder for itself (because that’s what we do best apparently ☺️ ). 🔊 “Europe has no unicorns, so we’re tech-losers.” Sure, the US has way more unicorns. But we also love to forget that Europe’s bar for success is different. Not every founder here is chasing billion-dollar valuations. Some are building profitable, sustainable companies that actually survive past Series B. Imagine that. 🔊 “The US is beating Europe by miles, so why bother?” Absolutely, the US throws absurd amounts of capital at startups. But with that comes chaos, hype, and crash-and-burn stories. In Europe, founders learn (are forced) to stretch every euro and build solid foundations. Less glamour, more grit! 🔊“Europe’s tech scene looks good from the outside but is fundamentally broken.” Maybe part of it is true. We do have fragmented markets, inconsistent funding, and far too few deep-tech investors. But that doesn’t mean everything’s crap here! Behind the noise, there’s quiet progress. So yeah, Europe has its issues. Plenty of them. But the whole “Europe can’t build” thing is getting old. Here’s to the founders, engineers, and dreamers still doing it the hard way. Slowly, stubbornly, and with a bit of that European edge 🇪🇺🇪🇺
