Windows and the PTY Problem — Still Behind the Curve It’s surprising that in 2025, Windows still struggles with proper PTY (pseudo-terminal) support. While UNIX-like systems (Linux, macOS, BSD) have had stable and predictable PTY behavior for decades, Windows continues to lag behind — making it harder for developers to build reliable terminal-based tools, run interactive shells, or port cross-platform CLI applications without workarounds. Yes, tools like ConPTY and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) have improved things significantly, but native PTY support is still far from consistent or developer-friendly. It’s time for Microsoft to treat PTY support as a first-class citizen — not an afterthought.
