Rugby is on the brink of a structural shift. R360, a new city-based competition backed by 885 Capital, aims to reshape the sport around a commercial model that prioritises IP, player equity, and storytelling over tradition. It is a player-led, media-first format built for global distribution rather than domestic federation schedules. The early friction was inevitable. The RFU has reportedly warned that players joining R360 could risk national team eligibility. This mirrors patterns already seen elsewhere: the PGA Tour’s response to LIV Golf, the BCCI’s restrictions on Indian players competing overseas, and UEFA’s reaction to the Super League. Every decade, one or two sports reach this inflection point. The issue is not calendar clashes or player contracts, but control of rights, narratives, and audience relationships. Private capital is again asking a difficult question: can federations still define the boundaries of elite sport, or will new platforms do it for them? 📖 Context on this and more news on this week’s Berkida Brief: https://lnkd.in/gjDXKWkV
