♻️ Supporting sustainable waste management in Wrexham ♻️ Axis is proud to be supporting Veolia UK on the preparation and consultation of a draft planning application for a new In-Vessel Composting Facility at Fenn’s Bank, Wrexham. The proposed facility would process around 50,000 tonnes of garden and food waste each year, collected from Wrexham, Shropshire, and surrounding areas - transforming it into Pro-Grow, a high-quality, peat-free compost. Axis has led the planning and consultation process, ensuring the proposal meets all statutory requirements under the Town and Country Planning (Development Management Procedure) (Wales) Order 2012. Our work includes coordinating consultation materials, reviewing feedback, and liaising closely with Wrexham County Borough Council to address key environmental and technical considerations. 🗓️ The public consultation runs until 1 November 2025, after which Axis will review all responses and finalise the planning application for submission. “We’ve worked hard to ensure the draft application addresses all statutory requirements and fully assesses any potential environmental impacts,” said Jamie Bradshaw, project lead and Senior Planning Consultant at Axis. “It’s been a collaborative process with Wrexham County Borough Council, and we look forward to progressing this important facility that will support more sustainable waste management in the region.” The project reflects Axis’s continued commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure, combining our expertise in planning, consultation, and environmental assessment to help clients realise projects that make a positive impact on communities. Q&A with John O’Dwyer, Associate Director – Environmental Sustainability, Powerday - What are the biggest waste management and recycling challenges currently facing London and the UK? Firstly, this is a crucial question as we are seeing multifaceted challenges across the value chain, especially in a densely populated environment like London, where we operate. In 2024, the UK construction industry produced around 100 million tonnes of construction waste and whilst the vast majority of this is recovered, only a third is recycled, and a very small percentage is reused. Ultimately, these challenges show the huge amount of opportunity that industry partners have to make a difference. At the start of the loop, the fundamental […]

I am happy to share our paper titled "The Contribution of Community-Based Waste Management Initiatives to Sustainable Urban Development: Evidence from Bogor City, Indonesia" Authors: Fikri Muslim, Dini Dwi Kusumaningrum, and Dina Ika Kusumaningsih Presented at The 2025 International Conference on Sustainable Innovation in Environment – AABI-AIBI Innovation Summit Solid waste management remains one of the most pressing urban challenges in the Global South. In Bogor, Indonesia, rapid urbanization and rising consumption have pushed waste generation beyond municipal capacity. Yet, within these challenges emerge powerful community solutions. Our study explores how Bank Sampah Units (BSU) and TPS3R serve as localized, community-based waste management models that integrate citizen participation with decentralized municipal systems. Through field observations and stakeholder interviews across six districts, we found that BSUs and TPS3Rs together form a multi-tiered system that: (1) Promotes waste segregation at source (2) Enhances recovery through localized processing (3) Generates economic value while reducing landfill pressure This synergy demonstrates how community and cultural capital can drive scalable, sustainable urban development — advancing SDGs 11, 12, and 13. Because when communities lead, cities grow stronger and better.

Strong policies create lasting change. In Bali, Provincial Regulation No. 47/2019 on Source-Based Waste Management sets the foundation for community-driven, source-based waste governance. It emphasizes the importance of managing waste starting from households, villages, and communities — guided by the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle (#3R) — and provides the legal basisfor participatory, fair, and sustainable practices. Through the CLOCC (Clean Oceans through Clean Communities) initiated by Sirk Norge, GO Circular Indonesia (GO SIRK) - as the local partner- facilitated the advocacy of Village Regulations (Perdes) on waste management in Dauh Peken, Bengkel, and Wongaya Gede villages in Tabanan, #Bali. These regulations were developed through a participatory process, capturing community aspirations to ensure policies reflect local contexts while aligning with Bali Regulation No. 47/2019. The Perdes serve as a legal and governance framework that promotes fairness, fostering a shared commitment toward better and more sustainable waste management. 🎥 Watch the latest episode of our “Learning from the Village” series to see how collaboration between local communities and village governments drives real change in waste management! 👉 Follow GoSirk Institute for more insights! cloccglobal.org | gosirk.co.id Agus Sumberdana Oda Kristin Korneliussen Nurul Hamidah Ni Putu Angieta Agripina I Gusti Ngurah Rae Arjun Arisara Oktavicha Salsabila Reza Nabilla Aulyana Rohma Wulan Septiani
