Last night, we were honoured to host Mr. Albert Chiu, Executive Chairman, Asia Pacific of EFG, for HKU BFin(AMPB)'s "Meeting the Practitioners" series at HKU Business School. In 2000, with just one vision and one partner, Albert started EFG’s Asia business from a blank sheet of paper. That entrepreneurial leap has since grown into a CHF 42 billion AUM franchise - a leading Swiss pure-play private bank in the region. But his story isn’t just about banking. Albert is also one of Hong Kong’s few FIFA international referees and now chairs the HKFA Referee Committee. On the pitch, his whistle directed the flow of the game; in the boardroom, his leadership has guided an entire regional franchise. // Hearing him bridge these two worlds was a masterclass in decision-making under pressure, visionary execution, and the quiet discipline that turns conviction into legacy. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝: 𝟏. “𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭.” Albert opened with this quote - a powerful reminder that transformative achievements often begin when we're unaware of the limits others see. 𝟐. “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭.” A principle that holds true both on the football field and in finance.
