It’s one thing to train a VLA model — it’s another thing to put it on a robot. Today’s compute, memory, and energy limits make it nearly impossible to host large, generalizable VLAs locally on robots. However hosting the models on the cloud introduces latency and unreliability. That’s why production deployments are limited to using smaller, task-specific VLAs that run locally (latency is not such a huge problem for research / development – though I have seen some labs even connect their humanoids via ethernet cables). In the mid-term, a hybrid approach will likely win out: 𝟏. 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐋𝐀𝐬 for time-critical functions (navigation, obstacle avoidance, safety) 𝟐. 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝-𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐋𝐀𝐬 for more complex tasks (fleet management, task prioritization) For example: a robot might navigate to your dishwasher using its local VLA, but unloading it would require connecting to the cloud via WiFi to access more advanced reasoning.

1.1 Gb -> 172 Mb 🔥 Davide Faconti's Cloudini was released to the Foxglove extension registry, which means you can install it in one click now. Attached is the EuRoC MAV dataset, where compressing the bag using Cloudini shrunk the point cloud size from 1.1 Gb to 172 Mb(!!). All replaying in Foxglove now without any noticeable hit in performance.
