Amnesty International’s Post

Activists on board on the Gaza-bound Sumud flotilla carrying aid reported explosions and multiple drone attacks against their boats while sailing in international waters off Greece on the way to carry out a peaceful mission, in solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide, by breaking Israel’s cruel and unlawful blockade. These attacks, along with the Israeli authorities threatening and dehumanizing statements against the flotilla endanger the lives of the crews of the flotilla and are a shameless attempt to intimidate them and their supporters. Given states’ inaction in the face of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and lack of implementation of the ICJ’s orders that Israel allow humanitarian access to Gaza, activists have decided to take peaceful measures to break Israel’s 18-year illegal blockade. States have a responsibility to ensure the safe passage of the flotilla, especially as they have repeatedly failed to get Israel to comply with its most basic obligations to ensure Palestinians in Gaza have adequate access to food, water, medicine and other supplies indispensable to their survival. They must step up pressure on Israel to ensure safe passage for the flotilla and to lift the blockade once for all. There can be no justification for obstructing life-saving aid from reaching Gaza.

Excellent post highlighting a critical point: the need for states to fulfill their responsibility in the face of inaction. Reports of drone attacks against civilian vessels in international waters, as confirmed by Italian authorities, are deeply alarming and represent a dangerous escalation. This context makes the call for states to ensure the flotilla's safe passage not just a gesture of solidarity, but an urgent legal and moral obligation. Continued inaction, despite the International Court of Justice's orders and the documented humanitarian catastrophe—with organizations like the WHO warning of famine and children dying from malnutrition—erodes the credibility of the international system. As RI professionals, we know the architecture of international law relies on enforcement. This flotilla is a direct consequence of the failure to hold violators of these norms accountable. Protecting this peaceful mission is a clear opportunity for governments to demonstrate, through concrete actions, that humanitarian law and the protection of civilians are non-negotiable principles. #InternationalLaw #HumanitarianLaw #HumanitarianAid #Gaza #Multilateralism

I hope they will be safe.

It took Israel 2 years to show to the world what really happened on October 7h 2023. But is not too late to face the reality of who is Hamas and why the Middle East needs to get rid of it. https://qr-codes.io/zr0aew
