Amnesty International’s Post

Tommie Smith and John Carlos were African-American track and field athletes who raised their fists during the 1968 Summer Olympics during the US national anthem to protest racism and discrimination. A new World Record, Gold and bronze medals Right fist raised in solidarity Left fist for unity A bead necklace to honour lives lost to racist violence A black scarf for pride and strength Socks without shoes for poverty and racial inequality An unforgettable stand for human rights. Protest has long been a powerful act against racial injustice, poverty, and discrimination. #ProtectTheProtest: We won’t imagine a world without it.

There's a really good video about the backstory and the harsh aftermath for all three (!) of them, also the lesser known Peter Norman from Australia, who stood in solidarity with Tommie Smith and John Carlos. Inspiring! https://youtu.be/w7ZkW52BnnA?si=Dp827f78dZP6RC6w (It's in German, subtitles should do it though)

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." _ Nelson Mandela Say No to #racism! always.

One of the most beautiful and emblematic images in the history of photography!

“An unforgettable moment in history — courage turned into a global symbol of resistance and unity. ✊ Their silent protest spoke louder than words, reminding the world that standing up for justice is itself an act of humanity. #ProtectTheProtest #HumanRights #Equality #AmnestyInternational #JusticeForAll

At the time, Brent Musburger described Smith and Carlos as "a couple of black-skinned stormtroopers" who were "ignoble" "juvenile" and "unimaginative." Has anyone ever been so completely wrong about anything? Their actions were elegant, appropriate, incredibly brave, and selfless. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/colintiyani_on-the-16th-of-october-1968-the-gold-and-activity-7384575556668993537-c1rO?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAAAtrN8B54M_5NzGyw9xBSf7mXpB9GvpHJQ
