New publication alert 📢 In "Working in Europe with a Single Permit: a Golden Ticket or Pie in the Sky?" I explore the implications of the new recast Single Permit Directive on the #livedexperiences of third country nationals working in Europe. I argue that whilst some of the deficiencies of the original single permit regime that created conditions for exploitation have been addressed in the new European rules, Member States must now seize the opportunity to re-design their national mechanisms with a view to frontloading procedural and administrative guarantees that are grounded in a #rightsbasedapproach. The premise of the article is drawn from empirical findings of studies conducted by the Equality & Refugee Law Clinics de l'ULB & Brussels Institute for Social and Population Studies with the support of Platform for Undocumented Migrants (PICUM) CNCD-11.11.11 FAIRWORK Belgium ACV, Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond Orbitvzw Ligue Des droits humains ABVV, Algemeen Belgisch Vakverbond Fundación Cepaim Association for Integration and Migration- SIMI.

In every country grappling with skills challenges, you can see the inertia of the tipping point: it's one thing to reform immigration policy, but don't forget to design the last mile... smooth transition and integration. https://lnkd.in/gSV8DEy7

Farmworkers #8: The Chinese Exclusion Act & Repeating History. In the late 19th century, most vineyard workers in the US were Chinese. However, growing anti-Chinese sentiment and violence led Congress to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act, effective on May 6, 1882. This was the first significant law to restrict immigration into the US and the first to specifically prohibit entry based on ethnicity. The Act imposed a 10-year ban on the immigration of Chinese laborers. It was extended and renamed the Geary Act in 1902. It wasn’t until 1943 that the Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed, and even then, only 105 Chinese immigrants were allowed per year. https://lnkd.in/eqajpWCv

Recently I realized in the news that, Finnish government is about to pass sweeping reforms to the parliament aimed at tightening the rules around international protection and entry into the country, notably impacting asylum seekers. Among these, a particularly stringent measure stands out: the inability of asylum seekers to change their residence status to study, work, or business permits. (according to the recent press conference of Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (ps) ) ⛔ This decision is concerning! By restricting legal options for asylum seekers to integrate into the society through work or study, we are not eliminating problems but sidestepping the real issues. The UK's experience post-Brexit provides a poignant lesson: removing legal pathways does not stop migration but pushes it underground. It results in increased illegal employment and the exploitation of vulnerable populations. 🌐 By denying asylum seekers the opportunity to contribute economically and academically, we risk creating a hidden underclass, deprived of basic rights and opportunities. This does not solve the problem; it merely obscures it from view. We must question whether these reforms are truly in the interest of national security or if they undermine the very values of dignity and fairness we uphold. It’s time for a serious conversation about developing humane and effective immigration policies that acknowledge and harness the potential of all individuals. My voice will most probably wont be heard but I believe it is best to demand more thoroughly thinking to take place on the consequences for the best of Finnish society's future, therefore I would like to tag Startup Refugees Ted Apter Laura Lindeman Laura Koivisto-Khazaal Aicha Manai and please tag whomever needs to read and reflect in the comments. #ImmigrationReform #AsylumSeekers #PolicyImpact #HumanRights #Finland

Labour are nearly in charge. But what will they do about immigration? Will they learn the lessons from their last stint in government or be tempted to emulate aspects of the Tories’ (or even Reform’s) approach? I’ve taken a look at their narrative and promises here: https://lnkd.in/gZYXf8Fr #refugeesupport #ukimmigration #ukpolitics

The #Cyprus Ministries, involved in Labour & Migration, focus closely on an expedited approach to the examination for foreign nationals' work permit requests. The Department of Labour's employment service has undergone organizational restructuring to enhance efficiency and streamline all operations. Developing an electronic platform and bilateral negotiations with third nations have already started to enrich the labour market. #residency #workpermit #relocation #immigrationadvice #corporatelawyer #citizenship #naturalization #labourmarket #migration https://lnkd.in/dfrD_muD

I am pleased to inform about the publication of our article "Democracy matters (to some extent): Autocracies, Democracies and the Forced Return of Migrants from the EU". We tried to empirically test an assumption that you regularly hear in the political discourse, namely that the EU is increasingly cooperating with autocratic countries on the return of irregular migrants. But does this really hold true? We looked at the EU's cooperation with all countries in the world. We also checked as to what changes if non-EU-country gets more democratic or more autocratic. The result is openly accessible. https://lnkd.in/egPTrh9c
