Drawing on signaling theory, the authors show that creating new internal ventures sends a powerful message about an employee’s leadership potential. Across two studies involving 643 employees, they found that: 1) Entrepreneurial behaviors (questioning the status quo, observing with fresh eyes, experimenting, networking broadly) make employees more likely to launch internal ventures. 2) These ventures, in turn, lead to more promotions - and, in larger firms, higher compensation. 💡 Key takeaway: Acting entrepreneurially inside your organization isn’t rebellion - it’s reputation-building. After three decades founding ventures, mentoring leaders, investing in startups and serving as a Fellow of the Institute of Enterprise & Entrepreneurs, there's a pattern. Founders who scale impact master the integration of masculine and feminine leadership principles to build 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵-𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦), not 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦-𝘵𝘰-𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦). My 2023 paper "𝙔𝙞𝙣-𝙔𝙖𝙣𝙜, 𝙏𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙨" explored how dynamic tension between opposing forces creates breakthrough innovation. That tension is the transformation engine. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲: Leadership is balancing energy with an adaptive mindset. 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺: decisive action, market penetration, scalable systems, disciplined execution. 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺: creative empathy, collaborative leverage, intuitive pattern recognition, adaptive flexibility. You need both to create painkillers and harness three integration points: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵'𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 '𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺-𝘻𝘰𝘰𝘮' 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘏𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦) Painkillers interrupt pain at the system level - your solution must do the same. Map value chains. Identify feedback loops. Find gaps where small interventions create cascading impact. The ventures that generate returns always understand the entire systems they operate within. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥) Data tells you what happened. Empathy tells you why it matters. Painkillers solve problems people pay to eliminate immediately. The creative empaths speak in a higher customers' language, not features and benefits. 3️⃣𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳'𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘺) Markets punish rigidity. Hold vision with conviction and evolve strategy with open hands. I've never seen a venture succeed with its original plan intact. The original idea, "Karam Karo, phal ki ichha mat karo" (Do your duty/work, without concern for the results/fruit), is rooted in the philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita and promotes a focus on process, effort, and selfless action. For older generations, especially those who grew up in more traditional or job-secure environments, this provided a moral and ethical framework for steady, dedicated work. Leadership First - Inspirational Life Quotes Leadership First The Modern Entrepreneur's Shift The modern entrepreneur's slogan—essentially, "Hamein phal chahiye with all form factor" (We want the fruit/results in every form factor)—reflects a mindset driven by: 1. Instant Gratification & Measurable Results In the startup world, the "fruit" (phal) isn't a guaranteed retirement; it's measurable, immediate, and multifaceted: Monetary Return: High valuation, revenue, profit. Impact: Solving a major problem for users, market adoption. Recognition: Press, awards, thought leadership. Flexibility & Lifestyle: The ability to work on one's own terms ("all form factor"). 2. Risk and Opportunity Cost Entrepreneurs often take massive personal and financial risks. Their work is an investment where the expected return (phal) must justify the opportunity cost (the salary, security, and time they gave up). Without the expected "fruit," the entire venture is deemed unsuccessful. 3. The Culture of Acceleration In the digital age, speed is everything. The lean startup methodology, rapid prototyping, and continuous iteration all demand quick feedback and validated results (the phal). You can't just work for 20 years and then expect a result; you need continuous, iterative results to prove your concept and secure funding.

THE BURDENS OF A CEO pt2 When I think of the CEO position, i think of Intrapreneurship. Most of us do not know that CEOs must have the same level of skills and capacity of a successful entrepreneur. In fact, to lead a company you didn't start requires that you come into the skills and capacity that birthed and grew the business. So a CEO must be Entrepreneurial but the difference is that innovation and problem solving is driven within the parameters of the company, which is what Intrapreneurship is about. A CEO who is an intrapreneur carries the normal weight of running the company along with the pressure of driving internal innovation. It's like driving the 2010 model of a car and simultaneously building the 2025 model of the same car. There are certain things that you will experience in such role; 1. The burden of protecting the cashcow while funding new experiments: The CEO must keep the business profitable while channelling resources to fund untested ideas. 2. The risk of failure: Unlike a Startup Founder, a CEO's failed Intrapreneurial bet can damage the brand reputation of the existing company and deplete investors' confidence. 3. Personal Leadership strain: Acting as both a visionary and operational manager can be extremely strenuous. You also have to struggle with decision fatigue as you constantly make high-stake calls— some of which are based on incomplete data. 4. Stakeholder Management: You would have a tough time convincing the board and shareholders if long-term innovation will temporarily hurt margins.
