Types of Valves 🔷 Isolation / On-Off Service: · Gate Valve: A reliable isolator. Full flow, minimal pressure drop, but not for throttling. · Ball Valve: Quarter-turn for quick shut-off. Excellent for tight sealing. · Plug Valve: Similar to a ball valve, a simple and effective ported plug for on/off duty. 🔷 Throttling / Flow Control: · Globe Valve: The go-to for precise flow regulation, but with a higher pressure drop. · Y-Globe Valve: A angled design that reduces the pressure drop compared to a standard globe valve—great for higher pressure services. · Diaphragm Valve: Excellent for corrosive or slurry fluids, as the process fluid is isolated by a diaphragm. · Pinch Valve: Simple and effective for abrasive slurries by pinching a flexible tube. · Butterfly Valve: Compact and quick-acting. Used for both isolation and throttling in large pipes. 🔷 Backflow Prevention: · Swing Check Valve: Allows flow in one direction only; the disc swings open with flow and shuts on reverse flow. · Lift Check Valve: The piston or disc lifts with forward flow and seats itself with reverse flow; often used with globe valves. 🔷 Specialized Functions: · Reducing Valve: Automatically reduces a higher inlet pressure to a steady lower outlet pressure. · Safety Valve: The critical last line of defense. It automatically releases pressure from a vessel or system to prevent overpressure and ensure safety. Let’s uncover the hidden heroes - it's Connections & Valves A Pressure Vessel isn’t just a shell of steel It’s a living system that takes in, releases, and protects under pressure. And how does it do that? Through Connections - the vital pathways for fluids and gases. The Inlet Valve: - The inlet nozzle is where the process begins. - It allows the entry of gas, vapor, or liquid into the vessel. - Usually designed for controlled flow, it ensures safe pressure buildup. The Outlet Valve: - Once the process completes, the outlet nozzle releases the product. - It maintains process continuity and avoids pressure accumulation. - In simple words, the outlet keeps your system alive and flowing smoothly. PSV (Pressure Safety Valve): - Meet the vessel’s guardian angel - the PSV (Pressure Safety Valve). - When internal pressure exceeds the design limit, the PSV automatically opens to release excess pressure. - It prevents explosions, protecting both equipment and people. PRV (Pressure Relief Valve): - The PRV is a safety backup system. - It works just like PSV - but is often used where liquids are involved. - PSV → mostly for gases/vapors - PRV → mostly for liquids - Both ensure your vessel never crosses the danger zone. In cylindrical vessels (like LPG cylinders or air receivers): - Inlet: For filling gas or liquid - Outlet: For discharge or usage - PSV/PRV: Mounted at the top to relieve excess pressure safely Every connection is designed under strict codes ASME, API, or ISO to guarantee performance under pressure. A vessel is only as safe as its connections and safety valves. A worker has been seriously injured in an incident involving a pneumatic actuator, after nitrogen gas was used to free a stuck knife gate valve. The end cap detached under pressure, with initial testing indicating separation occurred at ~2,700–3,200 kPa—far above the typical ~600 kPa plant air system the equipment was designed for. Key issues identified: • Single-stage nitrogen regulator allowed uncontrolled overpressure • Downstream components were not rated for cylinder-level pressures (up to 20,000 kPa) • No exclusion zone or overpressure protection in place This incident is a critical reminder that compressed gas is not a like-for-like substitute for standard pneumatic systems. Design limits, engineering controls, and isolation procedures must be reassessed when alternatives are introduced, especially under pressure.
