Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since #UnrealEngine kicked off the HMI initiative. Today, 35+ car models and over 2 million cars on the road run a UE-powered HMI. A recent Global Growth Insight report found that 62% of consumers said intuitive touch, gesture, and voice controls influence their buying decisions - a proof that a well-designed HMI isn’t just a feature, it’s part of the brand experience. At Mercedes-Benz, we take the subject of driver distractions inside the car very seriously.  Screens, notifications, touch controls and infotainment systems – they all fight for your attention. As a software team, the onus is on us to rethink how our technology can support the driver and minimise the cognitive load while the car is moving.   That’s exactly what we’ve done. For example, our Zero Layer concept uses AI to learn the user’s preferences and ensures the most frequently used functions are always on the main screen and just one click away. And our AI-powered MBUX Virtual Assistant supports the driver with natural-language conversations, thus minimising any “eyes-off-the-road” interaction with the touchscreen. To research new content and visualisation methods, we have our own modern distraction laboratory. Here, we investigate different MBUX concepts using computer-generated driving scenarios and special cameras to monitor the driver’s eyes and head movements. In addition, we also follow the European Statement of Principles (ESOP) and the American Automotive Manufacturers (AAM) self-commitment guidelines for designing and using in-vehicle systems, as well as ISO 15008 international standards. We go even further. With our intelligent distraction manager, we can restrict or block content on the MBUX depending on the safety risk or market-specific regulations. The new CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and the all-new electric GLC, for example, use eye-tracking technology:  if the driver looks at the content on the co-driver screen for more than about a second, the entertainment switches off completely. Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking at #InCabin Europe 2025, sharing my insights on how to establish a truly customer-centered product development process. Even though customer and user centricity are well-established mindsets in most companies, there are still many roadblocks along the way — often leading to products that deviate from what customers actually need or expect. Here are my main takeaways: 1️⃣ Shift the customer focus from the validation and field phases back to the concept and development stages. 2️⃣ Define UX requirements as a cross-functional tool across all development domains. 3️⃣ Build robust KPIs to measure and forecast the impact of design and concept decisions on customer satisfaction. 4️⃣ Make it happen — implement tools and methods that systematically integrate these KPIs into project decision-making discussions. A big congratulations to Robert Stead and the organizing team for an excellent #InCabin congress, providing the perfect platform for key players in Automotive UX, Safety, and ADAS to share technological advances and foster meaningful discussions about the future — which, as we can see, is just around the corner.
