India’s First Human Space Mission: Gaganyaan 🇮🇳 Here’s what we know for sure from ISRO: 3 Indian astronauts will be launched aboard the Orbital Module comprising Crew Module and Service Module. Mission altitude: ~ 400 km; mission duration: ~ 3 days in orbit. Launch vehicle: Human-rated LVM3 (HLVM3), with full safety systems and crew escape/abort capability. Return will be via sea-landing, with parachute-based deceleration of the Crew Module. Critical milestones achieved: first Integrated Air Drop Test (for parachutes / deceleration) recently passed. Astronaut training, life support systems, thermal protection, etc., are being developed and tested via ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre. During initial exploration of the lunar surface, astronauts will want greater visibility of their surroundings. Standing allows them more flexibility and better fields of view during this time.   On their return to the Human Landing System (HLS), astronauts may choose to deploy an angled suit-offload seat for comfort. The angle of this seat still allows for some flexibility while also minimizing the suit turtle-effect experienced in a full-sitting posture.   In both the standing and offloaded driving positions, crew can rely on the support hugging the front of their waist and the support hugging their backpack to avoid unwanted rotation or jostling.

Tiny avatars for astronaut health are heading to deep space aboard Artemis II. As part of a study called AVATAR, chips roughly the size of a USB thumb drive containing astronauts’ cells will fly side-by-side with crew on their journey around the Moon. The goal? Study how deep space affects human tissue, so we can protect our crew's health on future missions.
