Many thanks to Liliana de Sá Kirchknopf and Patrick Odier for the opportunity to participate in this panel at the #BuildingBridges conference in Geneva which was hopefully helping to foster the vital collaboration of MDBs with institutional investors to bring more private capital to developing countries and emerging markets.
This was an honest and useful conversation about how to use Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to get more private capital invested in underserved countries in different sectors. Building Bridges Conference 2025 in Geneva brought again together excellent panelist among them EBRD's Burkhard Kübel-Sorger, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, alongside IFC - International Finance Corporation, IDB Invest and The Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG). Work in progress: - MDB as an asset class is emerging but MDBs are still not very known in the mainstream financial sector - their value proposition: return and impact - GEM (Global Emerging Markets) database covering over 25 institutions, underpinning strong results over decades, needs to get out to investors - Standardization among MDBs needs to accelerate - Products for different types of investors are being offered: EBRD is preparing a SRT (Significant Risk Transfer) issuance in Q1 2026 - Development of local capital markets continues: local investors providing capital in local currencies can play a much stronger role Let's keep up collectively the efforts to mobilize private capital for real impact!
