Make no mistake, whilst this sounds like such an obvious point Annabelle Herd makes….. it’s still not the POV of the Gen AI big dogs….. If creators lose the rights to their creations…. What happens? Creatives don’t create, humanity loses a lot of what makes us human. Art, culture, entertainment….. decimated and scrabbling for the already hammered royalties (cough cough, Spotify) The other knock on from this is that this sets a precedent, imagine your face with diff eye colour or hairstyle being used on a billboard…. Not so easy to ignore now ????
Today, the Australian Federal Government confirmed it will not be making changes to the Copyright Act — a huge win for artists, songwriters and everyone who creates for a living. A massive thanks to ARIA - Australian Recording Industry Association, APRA AMCOS and the many people across our industry who worked tirelessly to make sure our voices were heard. Recently, I had the privilege of delivering a featured session at SXSW Sydney, where I strongly advocated for the retention of the Copyright Act when it comes to the mining of data for AI training. As I said: “Copyright isn’t just a legal framework — it’s the foundation of creativity."
