Italgas has inaugurated Italy’s first #greenhydrogen production plant integrated with a city gas network—an important milestone for the country’s #energytransition. The 500 kW solar-powered Hyround facility in Sestu, Sardinia will initially produce 21 tons of #hydrogen annually, ramping up to 70 tons by 2028. Using Power-to-Gas technology, hydrogen is blended with natural gas and distributed to households, businesses, and a local dairy. It will also fuel buses and supply a nearby refuelling station supported by Italy’s PNRR. Hyround: Italgas Opens Italy’s First Green Hydrogen Plant Connected to a City Gas Network In Sestu (Cagliari), Italgas has inaugurated Hyround, the first plant in Italy producing green hydrogen directly connected to a local gas distribution network — a major step toward the decarbonization of local energy systems. Powered by 1,746 photovoltaic panels (1 MW), the facility features an ErreDue 0.5 MW electrolyzer, capable of generating up to 21 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, with production expected to rise to 70 tons by 2028. The hydrogen will be used both: in pure form, to power fuel-cell buses for public transport; and blended with natural gas, for distribution through Italgas’ local network and industrial users such as Granarolo’s Podda dairy plant. With an overall investment of €15 million, including €1.5 million from Italy’s PNRR fund for the hydrogen refueling station, Hyround covers the entire value chain — from production and storage to distribution. The project demonstrates how existing gas infrastructure can play a key role in the energy transition thanks to its flexibility and extensive coverage. Sardinia was chosen as the pilot region because it already hosts Italy’s most advanced digital gas networks, ready to handle renewable gases such as biomethane, hydrogen, and synthetic methane. Ensuring safety is essential as hydrogen infrastructure expands. Hydrogen is the new energy heartbeat of Europe, will it replace NG in the future? Europe is taking a big leap toward clean energy with the H2Med project — a 648 km hydrogen pipeline that will connect Portugal, Spain, and France all the way to Germany. Built by companies like Enagás, REN, GRTgaz, Terega, and OGE, this massive €2.5 billion project aims to be ready by 2030. Once complete, it could carry 2 million tonnes of green hydrogen every year, meeting about 10% of Europe’s demand. That means renewable hydrogen from the sunny fields of Iberia could soon power factories in Germany — cutting carbon emissions, creating thousands of jobs, and reducing Europe’s need for imported gas. This isn’t just a pipeline; it’s the start of a new clean energy corridor that could reshape Europe’s economy and inspire the world toward a greener future. #Hydrogen #GreenHydrogen #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #H2Med #Sustainability #Decarbonization #EuropeEnergy #ClimateAction #NetZero #HydrogenEconomy #EnergyFuture #Innovation #CarbonFree

Reflecting on an insightful couple of days at the World Hydrogen Technologies Convention #WHTC2025 in Dublin, it’s clear that collaboration between countries, between sectors, in addition to integration with other energy technologies are all required to mobilise a hydrogen economy at scale. Also crucial is developing an understanding now of where future demand for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives is going to come from. This is why the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, under #PoweringProsperity, and our participation in the National Hydrogen Programme Taskforce, is working to develop that understanding, so that Ireland is well positioned to make the best use of our vast offshore renewable energy resources in the future.
