Associate Vice President of Sustainability, University College Cork

How was University College Cork research used by Government Ministers in Latvia and Lithuania in their negotiations on climate targets within the European Council? This is just one of the many fascinating things that I learned about at the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute seminar this week on the topic of bridging between research and policy. I'm very grateful to Denis Naughten, Ireland's former Minister for Climate for sharing with us how useful the MaREI research on energy systems modelling at UCC Sustainability Institute was in providing clarity on complex topics and enabling those fruitful Ministerial discussions. The seminar and discussion was recorded and is available here https://lnkd.in/ekiatTVV I reflected on a 17 year journey, providing a researcher perspective on informing, underpinning and co-producing energy and climate policy and building absorptive capacity in the policy system. This was followed by the wonderful Ian Hughes reflecting on an 8 year journey of being seconded for two days per week from a Government Department to a research institute exploring the poolycrises, deep societal innovation and futures thinking. Huge thanks to the many fellow travellers on this journey, including (but by no means limited to) Paul Deane, Hannah Daly, Fionn Rogan, John Curtis, Edmond Byrne, Ger Mullally, Maurizio Gargiulo, Alessandro Chiodi, James GLYNN, PhD, Brian Carroll, Peter O'Shea, George Hussey, Eimear Cotter, Frank McGovern, Jennifer Brennan, Gerry Clabby, Jerry D Murphy, Gillian Bruton and Peter Hourihane, and to our research funders including Research Ireland, Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Department of Education and Youth, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland and Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
