Asda Rolling Out ESLs Across Express Stores Asda has announced that it is rolling out electronic shelf labels (ESLs) across its largest and busiest Express convenience stores as part of its efforts to simplify operations. Working with VusionGroup and its partners, Renovotec and HL Display, the rollout to 250 sites follows a three-month trial at Asda’s Oxford Road Store in Manchester. The trial found that the technology freed up staff time, allowing them to focus on customer service, managing deliveries, and replenishing shelves. Approximately 2,800 separate electronic shelf labels (over 700,000 across the entire rollout) will be added to each store, meaning Asda’s staff will no longer need to manually update pricing in-store. The technology can also display allergen information at shelf edge through QR codes, in addition to displaying the cost, weight and unit price of products. Asda recently announced that it was resuming its Express store opening programme after a pause to focus on converting the 469 sites it acquired from the Co-op and EG Group. Up to 20 of the convenience stores are due to open before the end of the year, starting with Castleford on Wednesday of next week. Each new Express site will feature the ESLs from day one. “We’re continuing to invest in enhancing our stores, and the launch of cutting-edge technology across our Express estate is proof of this,” said Joseph Sutton, VP Asda Express, foodservice and fuel. “By streamlining our in-store operations, we can free up our colleagues to focus on what they do best – serving our customers. With the first of 20 new Express sites set to open next, we’re excited to build on this momentum and to bring Asda’s trusted value to even more communities across the UK.” Roy Horgan, CEO UK & Ireland – VusionGroup, added: “We are proud to be extending our partnership with Asda as they accelerate their digital transformation. This next phase is a testament to both Asda’s digital ambition and the strength of VusionGroup’s market-leading technologies. By combining ESLs with IoT innovation and data-rich insight, we are helping to transform the in-store experience for Asda customers and colleagues.” NamNews Implications: * Key benefits in practice: - Free up existing staff to improve in-store service level (rather than cut staff numbers per store) - Add unit pricing (hopefully enabling true like-with-like price comparison) - Error reduction in on-shelf pricing (either via delays in adding updates or genuine errors) * Given those conditions, the ESL rollout should make a difference… #AsdaElectronicShelfLabels #ESLs

Asda goes digital with electronic shelf labels — but the real revolution starts when shelves talk to customers. ASDA’s rollout of electronic shelf edge labels (ESLs) across 250 of its busiest Asda Express stores marks another strong step toward smarter retail. The retailer will deploy over 700,000 ESLs, bringing instant price updates, clearer product information, and reduced manual work for staff. It’s a move that makes perfect sense — especially in convenience retail, where shelf space and time are limited. But imagine combining that efficiency with interactive, mobile-powered experiences that take the shelf to the shopper’s phone. ✅ That’s where StoreGeni comes in.🛒📲 By integrating with ESLs, StoreGeni transforms static labels into a dynamic communication channel: ✅ QR codes become interactive gateways to rich product stories, allergen info, sourcing details, and user reviews. ✅ Customers can compare, favourite, and save products directly to digital shopping lists. ✅ Retailers can push contextual offers, loyalty perks, and cross-sells as customers browse. ✅ And all of this happens seamlessly — connected to the same pricing and product data powering the ESL system. In supermarkets and convenience stores, where every inch of shelf counts, StoreGeni gives customers far more information than any label ever could — while helping retailers build trust, loyalty, and incremental sales. ESLs make shelves smart. StoreGeni makes them speak. https://lnkd.in/etxGUEgy #RetailInnovation #SmartRetail #DigitalTransformation #CustomerExperience #InStoreExperience #RetailTech #Omnichannel #FutureOfRetail #ConvenienceRetail

The Week that was in the World of Retail and CPG: Few items which caught my attention this week 1. Investing on convenience for Grocery shopping, with investing in 'Last Mile' Delivery: This week so quite some activities around the last mile delivery and improving convenience for grocery shoppers . Grocery retailers across are investing more and more or expanding and investing in last mile/commerce delivery. Iceland Foods, an UK based retailer of frozen food has tied up with Stuart French headquartered global last mile delivery to expand their same day delivery. Now customers will have more delivery slots and improve the experience of in store shopping. Stuart though lost the delivery contract with CoOp UK earlier this year also continues, retains its delivery partnership with Tesco and Sainsburys' Across the Atlantic, Kroger has decided to expand its Kroger is significantly expanding its last-mile delivery by partnering with DoorDash to offer its full grocery assortment across nearly 2,700 stores across the country , starting this year. Last mile grocery delivery has seen a lot of innovations, investments and discontinuations as well over the last 5 years and continues to evolve. Automated robotic delivery, curb side pick up , collect from parcel lockers and many more have evolved over the last decade, helping to boost basket sizes and also footfalls at the same time. https://lnkd.in/dd8gr_hh 2. Training store colleagues has always been a challenging task and it continues to remain so. To address this luxury retailers is partnering with digital training companies in order to gamify the experience of store colleagues 3. A trivia: It is possible that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Munjaro may be responsible for creating close to billions of dollars of retail apparel inventory risk, as size trends shift downward and inventory misalignment happens, causing overstocking .🙂 That is all I had found interesting in this space. SIZE DOESN'T MATTER What truly matters is your perception of the store operator itself. From large hypermarkets to supermarkets, mini or convenience stores, e-commerce platforms, and even super mini-sized dark stores, the variety is vast. A huge store may offer 25,000 SKUs, while a compact 100m² dark store can carry over 2,000 SKUs. The location can vary as well, from a shopping mall to a standalone store that accommodates more than 100 cars, compared to a parking area that holds only six cars at the storefront. Ultimately, it comes down to how you view retail. It involves both product and service. If you are managing a retail store, you will be handling these two essential components: the products you sell and the team that sells them. Larger stores may seem easier to manage due to their available space, while smaller stores can present more challenges related to space constraints. However, each store format possesses its own unique characteristics and specific challenges that need to be addressed. What do you think?

Digital Shelf-Edge Labels: A Smarter Future for Retail Productivity When I started the #SirKenMorrisonLeadershipSchool, one recurring thought came from reading #NPS comments customers often expressed frustration over misleading prices. I saw how checkout colleagues had to walk back and forth verifying shelf prices, causing longer queues and unnecessary stress. Even the scanning team often struggles with constant price updates, rushing back and forth to update labels and verify accuracy That’s when I started thinking: Why not digitise the Shelf Edge Labels (SELs)? Digital shelf-edge labels allow prices to update instantly from a central system, reducing errors and freeing colleagues to focus on customers (VusionGroup, 2024). Globally, retailers adopting this system are already seeing major productivity gains. Walmart in the U.S. is introducing digital labels in 2,300 stores, cutting price update time from two days to minutes (Reuters, 2024). Edeka in Germany found fewer price disputes and faster restocking after adopting the same technology (NoviSign, 2023). Now, seeing Morrisons partner with VusionGroup to roll out over 10.8 million labels across 497 stores is truly exciting (Wm Morrison Supermarkets Ltd, 2025). I genuinely respect Morrisons’ decision. It’s a big step toward reducing customer frustration, empowering colleagues, and delivering a smoother shopping experience of customer. I’m convinced that rethinking shelf profiling is the next leap in productivity. By optimising our shelf profiling, we can create a system where incoming planograms require minimal adjustment. Except for major promotional changes, our teams wouldn’t need to spend valuable time reworking layouts. This proactive approach would be a phenomenal step toward driving consistency, efficiency, and productivity across the store. #RetailInnovation #DigitalTransformation #CustomerExperience #Leadership #Morrisons #Highperformanceculture Reuters (2024) Walmart to replace paper shelf labels with digital price screens in 2,300 stores.
