Honored to share my recent op-ed in Les Echos, where I explore one of quantum computing’s key challenges: long-distance qubit #connectivity. Scaling quantum isn’t only about more qubits. It’s about connecting them intelligently to build QPUs that are modular, reliable, and ultimately useful for real-world applications. Quantum Collaboration Over Competition 🤝 Our CEO Jan Henrik Leisse sat down with Jan Goetz, CEO of IQM Quantum Computers, for an eye-opening conversation in the latest issue of VDE dialog – led by Martin Schmitz-Kuhl. 👀 Their message? IonQ has announced it achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity using its Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology, setting a new world record in quantum computing performance. Demonstrated on prototype systems in IonQ’s R&D labs, the milestone will form the foundation of its 256-qubit systems planned for 2026. The result brings the company closer to large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computing by significantly reducing error correction needs and enabling more complex quantum algorithms. 🔹 Key Highlights - Achieved world-record 99.99% two-qubit fidelity, surpassing the previous 99.97% benchmark. - Uses IonQ’s proprietary EQC technology, which replaces lasers with precision electronics for qubit control. - Expected to power IonQ’s upcoming 256-qubit systems and future million-qubit architectures. “Reaching four-nines fidelity is a watershed moment for IonQ’s quantum leadership,” - Niccolò de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ. FORTY THOUSAND QUBITS IN A SINGLE FRIDGE Why is the Quantum Dragon in this picture trying to crawl into a fridge? Because he is trying to figure out how Delft Circuits is scaling quantum hardware. Brian Siegelwax pointed out the real bottleneck in superconducting quantum computing. We cannot scale qubits if we cannot scale the cabling inside the fridge. We are solving that problem. Not hypothetically. Not someday. Now. Advanced cryogenic cabling and connectors that support thousands of qubits per fridge. And a roadmap that goes to 96,000 channels. Which translates to roughly 40,000 qubits in a single fridge by 2029, depending on the qubit type. Some qubits need more lines. Some need fewer. The point is clear. The scaling wall is moving. Neutral atom quantum technology company Infleqtion has entered into a partnership with Silicon Light Machines. SemiQon and VTT have been awarded first prize in the “Impact Expected” category at the 2025 EARTO Innovation Awards in Brussels for their pioneering cryogenic CMOS chip. Designed to function at temperatures as low as –270 °C, the chip enables major advances in quantum computing, space technology and energy-efficient supercomputing. It addresses long-standing issues around energy use and heat dissipation — cutting power consumption in space applications by up to 90 %, and potentially saving up to USD 30 billion per year in global data centre cooling costs. Originally developed at VTT and now commercialised by SemiQon, the chip can also reduce quantum computing infrastructure costs by 30 % in the short term and up to tenfold over time.
