Harnessing Osmotic Power for Renewable Energy The World Economic Forum's June 2025 Top 10 Emerging Technologies report showcases osmotic power as an innovative renewable energy solution. This technology exploits the natural process of osmosis, where water moves through semi-permeable membranes from low to high salinity, generating hydraulic pressure to drive turbines. Pioneered in Norway with the world's first osmotic plant in 2009, recent breakthroughs in nanotechnology have enhanced membrane efficiency, making it viable for large-scale deployment. Suitable for estuaries and river deltas, osmotic power offers constant energy production unlike intermittent solar or wind, potentially supplying gigawatts globally. Pilot projects in the Netherlands and Japan since 2023 have validated its feasibility, addressing challenges like membrane fouling through self-cleaning designs. Integrating osmotic power into existing infrastructure could accelerate the green energy transition, providing sustainable electricity to coastal communities and reducing fossil fuel dependence. What renewable energy sources do you support? Discuss osmotic power's potential in the comments and share your ideas! #OsmoticPower #RenewableEnergy #EmergingTech #BlueEnergy #WEF2025 To view or add a comment, sign in

Very impressed and proud to see the innovation of a valued MISTRAS Group customer, SoCalGas, during a visit to their [H2] Innovation Experience as part of McKinsey & Company’s Global Infrastructure Summit. The microgrid we toured demonstrated how hydrogen can be produced, stored, and paired with solar energy to reliably power over 100 homes—even during power outages. It’s a powerful example of how innovation in hydrogen and natural gas infrastructure can help balance affordability, sustainability, and reliability. Thank you to David Barrett and Yuri Freedman for sharing your insights, and to the McKinsey team for facilitating this important discussion. #GIISummit #Infrastructure #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #Innovation #EnergyTransition To view or add a comment, sign in

🔥 A milestone for UK energy: Keadby Hydrogen Power Station enters the DCO examination stage. ⚡ This 900 MW project could become the world’s first large-scale, 100% hydrogen-fired power station, setting a new benchmark for clean power. Here’s what we know: ➡️ Joint venture between SSE Thermal and Equinor, with Siemens Energy turbine technology ➡️ Starts with a natural gas/hydrogen blend → transitions to 100% hydrogen ➡️ Integrated with the East Coast Cluster for carbon capture & hydrogen infrastructure ➡️ Targets capture and storage of up to 1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually ➡️ Around 800 construction jobs plus long-term roles once operational 💡 Why it matters: Kelly Azevedo Dent, Director of Development for SSE Thermal, said 💬 "Reaching this milestone with the Keadby Next Generation Power Station project marks a significant step forward in delivering what could be one of the world’s first hydrogen-fired power stations." This could act as a blueprint for net zero electricity, replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen and CCS to strengthen the Humber as a green hub, deliver vital infrastructure and boost air quality and economic competitiveness 🌍 📅 If consent is granted, turbines could be spinning by 2030, right in step with the UK’s 2050 net zero ambitions. Success at Keadby could spur stronger policy support for hydrogen, unlocking new investment and supercharging the supply chain 🤝🏼 #hydrogenenergy #netzero #cleanenerg #energytransition #carboncapture #renewableenergy #sustainability #greenenergy #infrastructure #ukeconomy To view or add a comment, sign in
