Norb and Kathy Krusiec have owned their farm in Mineral Point, Wisconsin for 55 years, managing over 200 forested acres. Initially in poor condition, they prioritized land conservation with contouring, grass waterways, and habitat programs like the Monarch Butterfly Project, which promotes flowering plants to attract beneficial insects to the land. Today, their land supports thriving ecosystems for all kinds of wildlife, while also contributing to sustainable agriculture and local partnerships. Vegetable gardens produce over 3 tons of fresh food annually; all donated to Madison-area food pantries—an effort they sustained for 20 years without outside funding. Since becoming Forest Carbon Works members, the Krusiecs now enhance their conservation efforts while generating carbon revenue and increasing long-term carbon storage and sequestration across their woodlands. Chestnut is proud to work with landowners to generate passive income while restoring and sustaining their land’s biodiversity for future generations. Kenya’s forests are under threat from illegal encroachment, private development, and unsustainable exploitation. Karura Forest in Nairobi is a powerful example. Once nearly lost to land grabbing, it was saved through activism and partnerships. Today, Friends of Karura Forest (FKF), have shown that community stewardship works, turning Karura into a model of urban forest conservation. But Karura is not alone. Forests across Kenya continue to face destruction from individuals and groups who put short-term gain above long-term sustainability. Without vigilance, we risk losing critical ecosystems that safeguard water, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Sustainable forestry and forest conservation demand multi-stakeholder cooperation: 🌱 Youth → driving passion, innovation, and activism through tree planting, monitoring, and awareness. 🏢 Businesses → sourcing responsibly, adopting FSC standards, and investing in restoration instead of destruction. 📜 Government & Policy → enforcing forest laws, securing land rights, and strengthening partnerships with communities. 👥 Community Forest Associations (CFAs) and groups like Friends of Karura Forest show the power of local action. When communities are involved, forests thrive. 👉 How can citizens take part? 1. Join or support CFAs and forest friends groups near you. 2. Volunteer time for tree planting, clean-ups, or monitoring. 3. Report illegal activities threatening forests. 4. Choose FSC-certified products to support responsible forest management. 5. Use your voice on social media, in your community, at the ballot box to advocate for forest protection. Forests need all of us. From Karura to the Mau and beyond, the responsibility is shared. Let’s each do one thing this Forest Week.

This week is FSC Forest Week, a global awareness campaign that drives appreciation of our forests, raises awareness about FSC’s work and highlights the role we all have in fighting climate change and biodiversity loss by supporting sustainable forestry. Here's a few vital forest facts: 1 )Forests have the unique ability to capture and store carbon dioxide—one of the greenhouse gases that contribute the most to climate change. 2) Forests are home to two-thirds of the Earth’s plants and wildlife, protecting the biodiversity needed to sustain our lives on Earth. 3) More than 300 million people call forests home. Forest communities depend on them for livelihoods, food, fuel, and medicine. Choosing FSC products for your workplace can have a positive impact, not only for nature, but also for these communities, and ultimately for all of us.
