Sufficiency PhD Days in Paris debrief Last week, I had the privilege to take part in the Sufficiency PhD Days at Sciences Po, one of the world’s most prestigious universities — an incredibly valuable gathering hosted by Dr. Yamina Saheb, one of the lead authors of the IPCC’s AR6 report — and the person who ensured that sufficiency was included in it. Among the inspiring speakers were: 🌿 Yamina Saheb – who presented Manfred Max-Neef’s model of human needs, offering it as a practical toolkit for supporting societal transitions — a good reminder that sufficiency is not only about limits, but about meeting human needs in meaningful and balanced ways. 🌿 Laurence Tubiana – French economist, diplomat, and CEO of the European Climate Foundation, known as one of the key architects of the Paris Agreement (COP21). 🌿 Thomas Princen – scholar of environmental governance, reminding us that sufficiency can only thrive within democracy, grounded in philosophy and equity. 🌿 Liam Shields – political philosopher, highlighting that sufficiency is not only an individual matter but a collective one, deeply tied to distributive justice and ethics. 🌿 Mathilde Mousson – from the European Commission, who led an inspiring coaching session for us on strategic engagement and political influence. Forty PhD researchers from around the world came together — from fields spanning construction, food systems, economics, energy, ethics, and transport — to exchange ideas, identify research gaps, and imagine what sufficiency can mean in practice. I was one of the few social scientists among the participants, and in my presentation, I brought forward the question of values, social imaginaries, and what we find desirable — exploring how arts, sensitivity, and imagination can deepen the sufficiency conversation. Drawing from my doctoral research, I discussed how cultural and existential dimensions of sufficiency are vital for transformation: inviting us not only to change policies and structures, but to reimagine what constitutes a good and meaningful life. Together, we now continue to develop the World Sufficiency Lab — a growing community for sufficiency research and collaboration. Managing Natural Waters – Erasmus+ blended Intensive programme brought together students and staff from our EU4DUAL - The European Dual Studies University alliance in early autumn, with participants from Poland, Malta and Finland. The students’ backgrounds ranged from chemical to construction and environmental engineering. Based on the feedback, the students gained an understanding of how human activity affects the natural balance of water biodiversity. They especially appreciated the combination of theory and practice in a form of field trips and lab work. An experience 10/10! As it happens, this year Sheridan College has ; - opened a 2 year millwright program to compliment the apprenticeship programs on offer - welcomed more electricians and electrical engineers than ever before and added energy and mechatronics to the standard electrical curricula - opened new programming in cybersecurity, and operational technologies - overhauled our computer curriculum to focus on using AI agents and tools broadly These jobs will build the infrastructure and support data and energy proliferation. I hope to see many students and families at our upcoming Open House events to showcase these great options. Nov 15th(Oakville) and 16th( Mississauga & Brampton). Brampton campus hosts our Magna School if Skilled Trades and our Engineering programs as well as our Centre for Intelligent Manufacturing. Great insights from Heather Chalmers and John Stackhouse about Canada’s future talent needs. The future is bright for industry but we will need people to build the infrastructure of the future. Al-Fanar Media is joining UNIMED–Mediterranean Universities Union and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in urging universities in the Euro-Mediterranean region to step up their role in collectively addressing the global climate emergency. UNIMED and UfM are spearheading an effort called the Girona Manifesto, which outlines a regional plan called the EuroMed University Initiative for Climate Action and urges universities to join the initiative before its official launch at COP30, the United Nations climate-change conference that will take place next month in Belém, Brazil. “By joining the initiative, institutions commit to enhancing regional cooperation in climate education, embedding sustainability across curricula, empowering students to shape climate governance, and fostering green innovation through living labs, sustainable campuses and entrepreneurial ecosystems”, UNIMED and UfM have said. Students attending the fourth Mediterranean Student Summit, held this month at the University of Girona, in Spain, endorsed this message, and UNIMED and UfM are calling on the region’s universities to take steps to actively support it too. Al-Fanar Media is part of this effort and calls on leaders of Arab universities and academic institutions to endorse the Girona Manifesto and join the climate-action initiative. We believe that constructive collaboration among universities across the Mediterranean Basin will enhance the educational process and broaden opportunities for mutual benefit at the educational, research, and institutional levels. In the 21st century, sustainability has been a major issue for all organizations. Corporations have been encouraged to address sustainability by stockholders. Universities are also asked to step up to improve sustainability Sustainability can be better understood through the lens of humanities. There is no way to protect sustainability without knowing history. Yet, these days, humanities research are underappreciated. While I think there needs to be more polished and tangible results from so many research papers on ecological sustainability, cutting out humanities serves no-one. Harvard's recent move to slash the number of PhD student admissions slots for the Arts & Humanities division by about 60 percent for the next two years - is discouraging. (This effects the admissions for History by 60%, Sociology from six PhD students to zero) I will give a concrete example - the urgency in the ecological protection of coral reefs 🪸 Coral reefs have a longstanding history dating back to over 400 million years, and the contributions towards both history and culture can be understood sociologically.  By the start of the 15th century, indigenous communities have done sustainable practices to protect their reefs Coral reefs are also the bedrock for sustainability of the whole ocean life. Understanding the history should not be separate from the economic or financial solutions to maintain its ecological preservation If you discourage potential researchers from humanities or sociological based exploration, where exactly can that knowledge or sustainable learning go? #sustainability #HigherEducation #PhD

A new global survey by Springer Nature and Thinks Insights & Strategy gathered responses from 3,785 PhD candidates across 107 countries—and the results paint a complicated picture of life in academia. More than half of PhD students (52%) still want to pursue an academic career. But for many (48%), that dream is starting to crack. The same survey found that 50% are discouraged by the funding climate, 50% are concerned that salaries are too low, and 45% worry about low job opportunities.
