Why are citizen science groups valuable? Community-driven citizen science groups fill in the gaps often left by larger organisations who do not have the resources to conduct frequent water quality assessments. The local and targeted efforts of their work means they are the first ones to raise the alarm when unusual events occur, reporting to the Environment Agency when they see something amiss. Our nature as a for-good volunteer organisation means all of our data is available to the public, providing a valuable asset to students, researchers and environmental policy makers.

📄 **Natural England’s Missing Evidence: What the FOI Revealed** A Freedom of Information request has uncovered discrepancies between Natural England’s internal consultation response on heather burning and the version shared publicly. Our analysis shows that key uncertainties were edited out, scientific caveats removed, and statements softened, creating a misleading impression of certainty. This raises serious concerns for evidence-based policy, transparency, and trust in regulation. Here’s what we found, and why open, honest science matters more than ever - link is in comments 👇

A new study published in Risk Analysis examines how residents and government officials in flood-prone communities—specifically Ortley Beach, New Jersey—view rebuilding and relocation after major storms like Superstorm Sandy. The research explores how climate beliefs, political affiliations, and worldviews influence decisions about whether public funds should support staying in or leaving high-risk coastal areas. The study, led by Rutgers University researchers, revealed that while all groups agreed on the economic burdens of adaptation measures such as home elevation and insurance increases, they differed on how to respond. Robert Kopp, RCEI Affiliate, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Clinton Andrews, RCEI Affiliate, Distinguished Professor at the Rutgers University Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy are co-authors on the study. Read and learn more at https://lnkd.in/e_Md4tMS

On Sunday POLITICO reported that the Department of Energy is removing key scientific terms from organizational discourse. In this week's lecture I discuss how nature, scientific, and environmental writers might approach writing the world in an era of language policing. And of course to do this, I draw on the teachings of the Buddha. https://lnkd.in/gs_EFdjN

Fire has always been part of life on Earth. It gave birth to forests, renewed soils, and created the conditions for ecosystems to flourish. For generations, Indigenous communities have understood this, intentionally using fire to shape healthier, safer landscapes. But over time, that relationship was broken. Fire became something we feared. Today, science helps us recover what traditional knowledge has always known: fire can be a tool for resilience. With researchers like Andrea Duane, fire ecologist at University of California, Davis, we learn how to blend modern science with ancestral wisdom, two ways of knowing that, together, can help us adapt to the environmental challenges ahead. Building resilient nature means listening to both the past and the present, so we can shape a safer, more balanced future.
